I've used it for large cities (booked hotels in both New York and Boston). I got the Copley Hotel in Boston, which while less known than the major chains, it was a normal 4-star hotel and I can't remember what I got in NYC.
Basically, if you'd be willing to use priceline for a hotel, then this is no different, except here you know a little info about the hotel vs. none at all. I was a little skeptical, when I booked the Boston hotel as I was doing it for a friend, but it turned out fine. The star ratings are obviously all relative, but if all you need is a place to sleep, then what's the difference where you stay? I'd probably priceline it just to make it even cheaper.
