Has anyone tried to burn a DL disc yet?

Nocturnal

I just tried to backup my Spiderman movie and the burn failed while it was doing something along the lines of DVD compatibility check or something like that.

What could've went wrong?

I have tried 6 Verbatims & 3 Memorex...& every damn one has failed so far.

All but one have failed almost instantly, & one got to 50% then failed.

I guess alot of people have had problems, but i'm starting to wonder if my burner just dislikes them for some reason, & i can't afford to try anymore.

Yeah I bought a three pack from CompUSA for $19.99. It's getting kinda expensive. I can't keep having these discs fail on me. I guess I won't try until another time.

ouch, that's 50 bucks down the tubes!

Dual Layer is too much of a marketing gimmick at this point. Manufacturer's have shown little interest in getting the volumes of disks to market that are needed for prices to start dropping. And I wouldn't be surprised if part of the high price is due to pressures from the MPAA in order to curb piracy (as that is undeniably a huge draw towards dual layer burning for many people).

Oh well, I guess we'll all have to live with single layer for now, and it's 'measly' 4.5 gigs🙂

It's possible that there's some hard coding into the burning sytem that would break duallayer burning if it's detected that the source disc is an encrypted movie, or something.

Hard disks are ALOT cheaper than DL DVD discs nowadays. I picked up a 120GB WD SATA HDD for only $50 at Fry's. With the external SATA connector that came with my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, backing up stuff is a breeze.

True, but many people want to make copies of movies for watching on stand alone players. And the only way to get a bit for bit perfect copy of a dual layer DVD is to either split it into 2 disks (time consuming and borks menus) or to copy onto a dual layer disk. And I can definitely see the advantage in archiving my DVD collection, as digital media isn't all that durable. Yes, you can archive them onto hard drives, but that isn't quite as convenient as what would happen if dual layer disks actually hit the sub $2 range.

Ive only burnt one dual layer disc on Verbatim DVD+R DL using my NEC 3520a.

It was a backup copy of Jade Empire for my xbox, worked 1st time, no issues.

Bought a 3 pack for around $25.00, so other two discs are gonna sit here until i feel i have something important enough to use them on.

I'll keep shrinking my movies until the DL prices come down a bit more. 😉

I don't know what you guys are doing wrong, but I've burnt several DL discs on my little 'ol NEC 2510a and they've all come out fine. Verbatim is the best I've used though. 🙂

Have you guys having troubles tried ripping the disk to the HDD first and then burn a disk from it??? I wonder if that can confirm the software dumping from finding an encrypted source.....

I have heard this a bit but I dont knwo if it is one manufacturer but I always support class-action lawsuits actions these fvckers...I say hold them accountable for whatever ridiculous claims they make for their products...

I still think Nvidia deserves getting hit with a lwsuit over the broken PVP in the 6800's....Fvckers!!!

Plextor 716a on this end. Recently bought a 3 Pack of Verbatim 2.4x DL's for $20 at Best Buy. Only tried one so far, wanted to back up my Suse 9.2 install DVD in case something happened to it. Suse used to provide a double sided DVD with the 64 Bit on one side and 32 Bit on the other, but with 9.2 it's all on one side over 8GB! I used the latest version of Nero and have the latest Firmware in my Plextor. Disc burned without a hitch. I had it verify it and it passed all the way. Like the other poster above I am saving the other two for something important like a Backup of important data. Hope they work as well as the first one did. I burned at 4x DL by the way. It gave me 2.4, 4 and 6x but I was afraid at that $$$ to try 6x.

Don't know what copying program you guys are using, but I also have the best luck ripping the DVD as a separate step using DVD decrypter.

Oh yessiree.

I never go DVD to cache to DVD.

I always go to teh HDD then to DVD.

I tried various burning programs, various filetypes, various firmwares, yeah, everything i could think of.

If DVD+DL media ever comes down in price, & they still don't work then, i will be using the exchange warranty on my drive to get another one.
Till then though, i'm keeping it, since it does a fantastic job with single layer DVD-/+Rs.

Not entirely true ... google for something called DVD Shrink. Doesn't hurt quality from what I can visually tell.

Edit:

Just saw you said bit for bit. Woops.

I was able to burn a disc. I had DVDShrink auto burning it after it ripped. I guess that was causing the error. I made sure this time I did everything manually and it worked fine.

In a nutshell, I used DVDShrink and did not shrink anything. Thus I got like a 8GB file and I just threw it into Nero and it burnt fine. My old school Panasonic DVD player that is like almost five years old read the DVD+R DL disc.

6x? Wow, I didn't know they were up to that fast yet.

They aren't that I know of. The DL DVD I burned was a 2.4x Verbatim but Nero and the Plextor was allowing me to select 4 and 6x but I did not want to press it so chose 4 and it worked great.

I haven't had any problems with my Plextor 716A writer either, both the DL disks I burned went without a hitch. One of simply archival storage, one was an archive of the movie Cellular.
