Silver coin reducing CPU's temp


I am thinking of trying this out... get an all silver coin, mold it out into a cap and place over the core. Anyone try this out?

Why wouldn't he just melt the silver coin over the heatsink and silver plate it? Or won't that work (ie: will silver bond to aluminium?). I considered doing this a while back but I'm no longer sure its worth the effort (the spec for PIIIs is minimum 7 years @80c. So why bother?

I dunno why he didn't plate it... or make a silver shim. I want to make a simple cap to go over the core like those copper ones.

To have a more stable system, and maybe overclock a little more. I've just caught the mod bug and looking at all the ways I can modify and improve my system... this looks like a cool project I'll probably do it, just wondered if any one has done it before.

sounds good, but after all I've spent on heatsinks, peltiers, and fans I don't have enough money for any substance more precious than talc!!

Oh, missed that last part. Well, he are some of the things I considered downing to lower my rather high full-cpu temps (48c):

1. Silver plating the heatsink;
2. Bringing cold air up from the basement via a flexible pipe and ducting it to the cpu;
3. Putting the computer in the basement with a hatch door giving access to the floppy and DVD drive;
4. Mounting the motherboard under my floor - in the basement - and fishing the IDE and floopy cables on the floor near my desk.

I ran into another individual currently doing #2, and claims it works so well he can keep his beer cold just placing it ontop of his case

The other options isn't as glamorous...buying a better heatsink/fan than using the supplied Intel.

You can get a few silver coins for $10-15 bucks and make a nice shim... I was just gonna use my friend's blow torch and melt the coins and then place them in a mold. Make a full shim perhaps instead of a cap. Just don't know what to use to mold the CPU without shocking it. Maybe buy an existing copper shim (one with a indentation for the core) and use that.

I like that idea. But I don't know where to begin as I don't have a basement I'd like to see an all silver heatsink... or maybe a mixed silver alloy of some kind to prevent corrosion.

Now a diamond heatsink is crazy... silver is at least reasonable. But I'd like to see a diamond heatsink made... maybe one day we will. How would they make a diamond heatsink anyway?
