Has anyone tried the new Windows Media Player 9?

I tried the last release of WMP 9 and it screwed up my system. It wouldn't play any media files without locking up. I could NOT remove it and had to re-install XP (over the top of my current installation) to get WMP 8 back and functioning properly. Shortly after I downloaded it from the Windows Update site, they pulled it off the site (I wonder WHY?)

Now I see it's back on the Windows Update site and I am very afraid to download it. I was just wondering if anyone has downloaded this new version and how it behaves on an XP system.

I downloaded it on windows update... works fine for me. It did offer me to make a restore point... but my system restore was off and i wanted to keep it that way.

i've been using WMP9 since the beta came out. Gotta love the HDCD support!

It works, pretty much the same as WMP8 - playing a video will eat up all the available RAM in my system - 260MB to 0 in about 5 min; seems like some horrible memory leak - sucks, because if I try to use the PC when it is almost out of memory, then of course the swapfile goes crazy.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still hesitant because I have so many different CODEC's on my system and WMP 9 Beta wouldn't work properly with them, apparantly. Oh well, what the heck, I'll try it and see what happens...

Yeah, mixing ms codecs and non-ms codecs are going to run you into trouble. Best reformat and install only the mplayer9 and ms codecs from their update site. Works fine with everything anyway.

It seems to be working OK for me, and I have a mix of MS codecs and the Nimo Codec Pack.
