Has anyone tried cutting a hole in their case with a hole saw?

I want to remove the fan mesh on my case but don't have a dremel. I read somewhere that this can be done using a hole saw as well as dremmel.

But has anyone tried this? What kind of results did you get?

yes, and it came out ok. you're still gonna need something to grind the edge of the hole. I was too lazzy so I got some u-type molding from autozone and just covered it up.

it you live near a harbor freight, you can easily get a dremel type tool for about $10. I also have a nibbler, I use it more often than I should.

I've used a 3" hole saw to cut a hole in my Lian-Li aluminum cases to rerout power cables as per directions posted on this forum recently by a user named MechBgone.

I haven't tried it for a fan-sized hole, but I think I would prefer a dremel for that.

I've done it several times for 92mm holes in Palo Alto cases (and they use high quality steel). I used a 1/2" drill, a Milwaukee hole saw, and cutting fluid; I took my time, and it came out fine...it's just not recommended for the old or weak :)

Most hole saws are built for use with wood. See if you can find one with the finest teeth possible for steel. Use cutting oil or have someone spraying water out of a spray bottle on the drilling area while you drill. Keep it cool and take your time. A fine cheap mill-bastard file will take the burr off.

I would use a hole saw "bit" slightly smaller than the size to cut, and then finish off with an abrasive flapwheel.

I used the CompUSA cutter for the first time this weekend when I removed the grilles on an Antec SLK3700AMB and it worked great! It's not as messy as using a Dremel, either. Now I just need to find some "u" molding to dress up the edges, but I'm having a hard time finding some. I tried Autozone, but all they had was chrome door-edge guard. Anyone have suggestions on where I could find the "u" molding in about 1/4" to 3/8" wide strips? Thanks!

How much is that?

Looks like a nibbler. does it taste like a nibbler?

Looks very much like a nibbler indeed, and if I remember correctly from what other people have said it is so (live a some 1000Km's - aka europe - from the nearest CompUSA so never seen it irl so I could judge properly).

Back to topic, yes many people use holesaws to cut their cases, some even prefer it to dremels.
