I was wondering if anyone had experience taking the ihs off the processor and if it made any temp difference.

Is it really worth the risk? These chips run cool as it is don't they? I'd hate to see you crack your core inadvertantly while putting on your hsf. I think that was the main reason for the heatspreader in the first place. Too many people cracking their cores.

Just push down :)
That'll give you better contact; and you have [as much] of a risk of crushing the core.

some chips run hotter than others but it's hard to say why.

i haven't cracked a core yet but i don't use a normal hsf. i'm using a waterblock so no problems or issues (at least) with cracking the core.

I'm going to watercool and thought it would be good to have as little resistance as possible. I'm probably going to wait until the new video cards come out to build. I want to wait for directX 10/direct3D 10. (I'm also fairly broke right now)
