Comments. I thought about buying it at costco tonight but my online price is better...Should I buy it?

I love Stargate, and I too would like to know if this DVD is worthwhile.

However, I do like the television series more, Kurt Russel just annoys the heck out of me.

great movie but why pick that movie to redo in special directors cut edition? seems like a lame attempt to make more money.

The movie was good but the series is better. To bad that they only are doing one more season after this one. The only good part about the season ending is that they will make a movie. I hope they use Anderson instead of Russell.

Aye, there's really not too much to it that hasn't been released previously (extras wise). I reviewed it here.

You'd think with "Ultimate Edition" they'd pack more on it... As has been said though, audio is very solid on it, DTS track sounded great.

Wow excellent review DanJ. So could you explain to me why these companies are releasing these newer DVDs with the ambigous lableing of "anamoric widesceen" version? I've notice all these versions don't look quite right on my 16:9. I like the black bars. If the original source was 2.35:1 I want to see it damn the black bars. I feel I'm loosing something with these "enhansed versions" why don't they just relase it like the old laser disks did "widesceen" vesion which seemed to capture the whole picture as shown in the cinema? Comments appreciated🙂

Thanks for the comments on the review 🙂

Anamorphic widescreen, yes. This is actually a good thing, but you're right, there still should be black bars. I'm thinking your DVD player is not set to display this correctly as even discs with ratios of 1.85:1 will have slim black bars, those in scope (2.35:1) should have increasingly noticeable black bars. But anamorphic widescreen is very important, without it you'd have black bars on the side of your 16x9 set, as well as on top and bottom; the anamorphic presentation will expand to fit your set horizontally as well as giving you greater vertical resolution; but it should in no way remove sides or top/bottom information. I'd try looking in your DVD players setup menus and make sure that its not zooming or cropping.

But anamorphic widescreen is very important; without it widescreen would look pretty bad on widescreen sets (black bars on left, right, top, bottom).

Did someone say a new Stargate movie? I remember when the series first came out on Showtime I was bummed I could not see it. THen when it moved to Sci-Fi I saw an episode and was like, "Huhhhh?" The plot was very confusing at the time. Then I started watching the new episodes after Farscape. It was growing on me. Then they started with "Stargate Monday" and that was it. I've seen most of the episodes and actually have all my questions answered about the plot and such. Once you get past the obvious plot flaws (just why does everyone speak English, and why is it that Earth is the only planet that defends their stargate?) its a very tightly written show. It will be shame when it ends. Though I can't wait to see what they do with the Furblongs(sic) as they are the last of the 4 races we might meet. OF course that begs the question...what about the ancients?

Anyway, great cast, great scripts, and great production. All around great sci-fi show that isn't afraid to laugh at itself. Like in the episode where they were making a Stargate TV show and someone commented on why do all the aliens speak english. Or the occassional MacGuyver comments. Or RDA and "Hello...Newman".
