No, the original Z28s had 302s.

Edit:
Trans Am racing had regulations that restricted the engines to no more than 5.0L, 302 is 4.9. The 305 that came later had the same stroke as a 350 but with a much smaller bore and was done for the gas saver/emissions movement. The 302 had a shorter stroke and from what I've heard was one hell of a top end motor.

A couple pages with info:
http://www.holisticpage.com/camaro/camaros/302.htm
http://www.musclecarclub.com/musclecars/general/musclecars-engines.shtml

"In 1967, Chevrolet quietly created a Z/28 option for its new Camaro. Specificaly designed to compete in the Club of America Trans Am racing series which placed a 305 cid limit on its entries, the Z-28 was available to the public solely to qualify the car for racing. What you got was a unique 302 cid small block that was created by taking the 327 block and installing the short-stroke 283 crank. Advertised horsepower was listed at just 290bhp, which was not very impressive until one hooked it up to a dyno and got actual readings of 360-400bhp. The Z/28 Camaro proved to be difficult to launch on the street because its high reving engine was lethargic under 4000rpm and worked best when it was shifted at 7500rpm (!)."

7500 RPM pushrod motor in 1967. Who needs VTEC? :D

<vtec fanboy> but vtec is more techonologically advanced and cams are better and it's more complex and expensive so it has to be good!</vtec fanboy>

vtec would solve that under 4000 rpm lethargy problem.

There was a special edition fourth-gen (unofficial fifth gen, 98+ MY IIRC) that had a super sweet 302 in it, the car was faster than a stock Z28 at the time (assuming LS1 engine). I can't remember if GM made a couple as a concept or if it was built by a third-party in coop with GM, but I remember reading the article about it.

I was seeing how fast I could pull a leg with ones wanting to claim a 302 has always been a Ford motor never to have been built a few times by chevy. Didnt take long for others to know what I was talking about ;)
