Has anyone owned a Range Rover here?

I've got an opportunity to pick up a high mile '96 Range for cheap; it's already converted to regular suspension and leaks nothing. Any thoughts?

Edit: Got it, $3800. :)

coworker had a landrover. He said it was a money pit and he was even knowledgeable about fixing cars. Said the parts cost to much even if you did it yourself. But I think he went offroading on and rolled it once so he was rough on it. Said he also spent about 400-500 a month on gas

# Not many people know that Land Rovers attempted to market a computer. Why did they stop? They could not find a way to get it to leak oil!
# A Land Rover doesn´t leak oil, it marks it´s territory. Did you hear about the man whose Land Rover didn't leak oil? The factory took it backand worked on it until it did.
# Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into a Land Rover and asked the owner "How can you tell one switch from another at night? They all look the same. " - "He replied, "It does not matter which one you use, nothing happens !"

Okay, seriously. I talked to a guy that owned a Land Rover, he had a tail light bulb burn out. Went to the auto part store and picked up a standard bulb. The pegs that hold it on didn't line up. So he went and got the right bulb, paid $10 or something like that for it. Compared it, one of the pegs on the Land Rover bulb were slightly offset compared to the normal one. Other than that, there was no difference outside of the fact that he could've bought two dozen of the standard ones for the same price.

That's for 2004 model year vehicles. Range Rover does not appear to have been rated by J.D. Power for 1996 model year vehicles, as they are not listed on the 2000 Vehicle Dependability Study.

EDIT: Actually, after reading the fine print it just says they finished below the industry average, but they did not provide rankings for those brands.

i find that the old models have horrendous ergonomics in my limited experience with them (valet'ing 37892438927489237 RR's over 5 years). The light/window switches in particular.

I don't own one, but my mom has a Freelander (been a major pain), and I've been offroading in some pretty serious stuff with the local official landrover sponsored clubs, and a couple of rangers were there. They were crap. Nice, but leather didn't serve them very well. My '88 Cherokee held up better. I think they're high priced status symbols that have horrible design...

They're rep is pretty awful, but a friend of mine (Land Rover enthusiast) claims that something like 80% of all land rovers ever build are still on the roads. I was skeptical, but he was pretty adament. Can anyone verify/disprove this?

I've been reading stuff on rangerover.net and there seems to be a good amount of info on the most common problems. The air suspension is a huge pain and they do tent to leak oil. Other than that, it seems in line with import cars (I've owned an audi, benz and bunch of jap sports cars)... expensive parts, killer labor.

When someone calls in to Car Talk with a LR question they just laugh at them and tell them to sell it.

Car Talk

epinions on 97'

After reading the reviews, I'd find a Jeep. At least the parts/maintenance won't bankrupt you

I used to wheel with a guy that had one too.. It was a complete turd.. we ended up towing it more than it drove.

I think he ended up selling it and getting an old Scout II..

Not sure how well they hold up in their native environment. (Mall Parking Lot)

Reliable? Not sure.

Ugly? Definitely. Why someone wants to buy a box on wheels is beyond me.

They come with air springs from factory ... and those nearly always fail. The previous owner converted it to regular springs :)
