has anyone NOT hit over 2.1 GHz on 1.6A northwood

pretty much what the title says....i'm wondering how many people out there can't get over 2.1 GHz out of their 1.6A northwood processors....also, how many can't get over 2.4 out of their 1.8A's. just curious as i may take the northwood plunge in the near future

Doubtfull.............I haven't seen anyone complain or remark that they couldn't in any forum...........🙂 Like it or not, this particular Intel chip is the best thing going right now as far a value/price/performance. Intel got this one right...........😉

Just a variation on the question: Whats the highest FSB speed has anyone hit with the P4 As? With the 133 (Quad pumped) coming out in a couple of months, currently ones should be OCing to near 533FSB (133 QP) with some regularity.

AKaz

PS. i hope to buy a P4 2.0A later in the year and OC it to 133-167 Mhz FSB range. 133 atleast should be achievable (much like my current P3-700@933)

yes..I had all amd setups till two weeks back. I got a gigabyte sis 645 and 1.6a and am so happy with intel that I ordered TH7-2 and rdram replacing another AMD setup.

My 1.6 is currently at 150FSB (2.4). It would most likely do more........but, I'm not giving it anymore juice.............I'm afraid she'll blow captain..........😉:Q LOL!🙂 Oh, BTW...........it's on a TH7II board!

Here's the other thing I'm wondering. If it hasn't hit 2.1, where did it come from? I've heard the best overclockers are from malaysia, but mine is from Costa Rica (I ordered it from Newegg). I installed windows at 2133, but I still haven't tried any higher.

ttt......let's keep this thread goin....i really wanna know what kind of speeds i can expect from a 1.6A or 1.8A northwood

i have a question, i'm currently wanting a 1.6 northwood setup, does the ram realy matter, such as brand? I was thinking of getting Kingston 2100 DDR, does the kingston hold up with overclocking?

i'll let you know in a few hours...... got a 1.6 on a Asus P4B266-C waiting to be overclocked....

wow... hearing all these o/c success stories makes me wanna go back to intel 😛 how much is ur cpu/mobo running u guys? btw, u use rambus or ddr? on thing that kinda peeves me is ram prices shooting back up 🙁

I'd overclock my 1.8A if I could actually get a CPU temperature reading from it outside of
the BIOS screen (P4S333 MB, tried several progs. including Asus Probe). Anyone mind
telling me what temp differences they've noticed in their 1.8A (@1800 with stock HSF)
between idling in Hardware Monitor (BIOS) and while running something fairly CPU
intensive in Windows?

I get a reading of roughly 32°C in hardware monitor.

I have a Costa Rica 1.6a from Googlegear. I haven't been able to really hit 2.1ghz with that chip. The computer acts really funny at that speed, and I'm not sure if its a cpu limitation or a motherboard glitch. At anything over 125fsb the computer runs slow as hell. There are no blue screens, and the computer will eventually do the tasks you want. At those speeds though, it takes about 10 minutes to load windows 2000. That is the slowness I'm talking about.

I have another 1.6a sitting at home that just arrived. I'm hoping that it is a malay and will allow for higher overclocks, but we'll see.

BTW, I ordered the Samsung 8 device 256meg rimms from googlegear. They can't run even at a 125fsb. I have to lower the multiplier to push the cpu farther. I have 16 device rimms on the way. Hoping that will allow higher overclocking of the memory.

Sound to me that your chip is overheating and the P4 is throttling the speed down to keep the heat down,Get a better heatsink or better case ventilation & see if that helps.

I've heard of about 4 or 5 instances in which people were unable to hit 2.1GHz, and a two of them were unable to do better then 1.9GHz... so it's certainly possible that some P4 1.6A's just won't do 2.1GHz, but those seem to be in the distinct minority. From what I've seen 2.2-2.3GHz seems typical, with a small number doing as high as 2.4-2.6GHz.

Damn these are some amazing OC results. I'm glad Intel finally has a product that has good price/performance, more choices for consumers is always a good thing.

I know I am going w/ the 1.6A. Just cannot deicide between Asus P4B266 or P4S333 mobo 😕...Heard great things about both setups though....I was also up in the air on the Kingston or Crucial RAM also as a previous post stated.

Newegg has the 1.8a @ $191 right now, going to wait a little longer for a price drop before I jump on it. Just last week it was at $199 so the price is going down pretty fast.

I think you are pretty much guaranteed ~2.2 GHz, and shouldn't have much problem doing 2.4 Mine will do 2.4 and probably more, but I don't feel like upping the voltage (Costa Rica chip on P4S333). If you can't do 133 FSB (2133 MHz) then it's probably not the CPU.

The 1.6A sounds absolutely great. It's a shame for me though. I just bought my 1600+ XP a month ago and it runs quite hot already at 50 Celsius so i'm afraid to overclock.

Trader05- I got my Kingston 256MB DDR 2100 modules from Newegg and they have been running without problem on my 1.6A setup at 133Mhz. I haven't had any luck above 133, but I need to try a little bit more.

It seems that I already know what my next CPU purchase will be 😉

What seems to be the best motherboard for overclocking these babies? Seems that most of these are running off of ASUS P4B-266 or S-333 boards. Anyone had good/bad experineces with the ABIT boards?
