Has anyone just moved and started a new life?

Growing up I always wanted to be a "white-collar" worker doing 9-5. I didnt want to have to work my ass off like some of my friends who decided to drop out of school and are now working in hot conditions making a measely $8/hr for 7 days a week. Well, since I've graduated college 3 years ago, I'm still not happy. I'm a net admin making $32k for a private school, and there's no room for growth. I started taking up real estate, and while I enjoy the extra cash, I still don't feel that I can be as happy as I want to be.

Well, I've had thoughts of just packing my bags and moving someplace. California is a good start since I have friends over there, but the cost of living is ridiculously high. I need some place warm, NOT ridiculously hot, so I thought about an island such as Aruba or something. Then again, I dont know if I can give up my city life for an exotic place. What would I do for a living? Would i get sick of it after a while?

I've had friends who left Philly for college and they loved in. I dont know if I can make the adjustment. I dont feel like starting all over again. I'm 25 BTW, but that's still young. I'll stop ranting for now and hear if anyone else has done this.

I did a couple weeks ago and it's going well, but then again I have a tendency to flee quite often. If there's nothing left for you where you are, it is time to go someplace else.

Come to Nebraska... warm summers, cold winters... nice good all around weather :) Omaha is a nice place, good culture, nice people, not too big, not too small... has a nice historic part of town, but still has lots of BIG stores like Best Buy, big malls, Nebraska Furniture Mart... if you're serious about it, come check it out... I don't think you'll be dissappointed.

Lincoln is just as good, but Omaha is bigger.

Oh, and don't let people tell you it's a "hick" state because we're far from it.

Why don't you start sending resumes and setting up interviews in these places? If you get some calls, most companies will fly you out on their dime. It'd be a nice (and free) way to check out new cities.

The problem is, the cities I would actually want to live in, probably has a whole bunch of folks who are unemployed. I'll be competing against a whole bunch of other ppl. It's bad enough i cant even find a job locally. They either want someone with much more experience who they dont want to pay what I'm worth.

I did exactly that. I picked up and moved from upstate NY to Los Angeles, CA. My old boss called me up and asked if I wanted to move out there and work for him. I had never even been to California before but I did it anyway. That was many years ago and I'm still here. Married, homeowner with a 3 Y/O baby now. I'm happy with my life.

At least if you do it you won't look back on your life years later and say "I should have done this" or "I should have done that." I think that would be worse than taking a chance.

Good luck with your decision.

Who would want to move to Nebraska? That's the place the settlers starved through on their way West. The points you named about it are true of just about any place in America. Warm summers, cold winters? Good culture and nice people.. I'm drooling already. I'm buying my plane ticket right now to see this Furniture Mart you speak of.

I would do it in a heartbeat if I had the same opportunity as you did. It's tough when you're trying to start from scratch. I might just go to Aruba and become a tourist guide or something! LOL

You're young, so just do it. If you fail now, at least you have time to do things again.

After a year out of college, I moved from Ohio to Texas. Mostly because of trying to find work in my field.

I did, I moved from Ohio to upstate NY. It was pretty crazy, unexpected and such. I did it with 500$ in the bank, spent 200 on getting here and the other 3 on my first months rent. I have 2 roomates, so we all split the rent. I had known one of them for years beforehand from the net, it was a crazy time. But yeah, found a job, working at mr subb temporarily, and then switched to another job doing what I had done before, insurance verification for a big company. Doesnt make the best of money but it gets the job done I spose

In any case, packing up and moving is very fun, especially if you're good at meeting people, making friends and such. I'm outgoing, so I am pretty good at making the best of any situation.

I should've done that then. Atleast while I was struggling to find a job, I could've done it elsewhere and not here. Now, I have a stable job but my life sucks. No more fun in my life and I'm still young.

Come to Texas, it's "a whole other world." You can sleep on my couch. My wife and kids are OOT for aweek or so, so if you get comfortable before they get back, they won't kick you out.

By the way, do you like movies about gladiators?

aah this is the thread you talk about :)

and lilcam already knows my thoughts on this, but yes, i plan on getting the hell out of this area w/in 2 years or so. my GF and I after getting back form Aruba are going to look into what would be involved in moving there. a taxi driver told us that you need to get government permission to actually work in aruba, so there is definitely a lot of research involved on what would need to be done to do this.

i've lived right outside of DC my entire life, and DC doesn't impress me the least anymore, and people come from all over to visit DC. i am sick of this area and i just really love water. not drinking water, but like the ocean. so my gf and I are seriously going to consider picking up and moving to Aruba in a few years maybe and just live a simple life where you don't have all this crap to worry about. not to mention, a few people told us you can get single bedroom apartments for $400/mo and houses there can be had for $50-$60 grand. the woman at the hotel who worked at the front desk said the minimum wage is $800/mo and that she makes about $1200/mo and has 2 kids and is living comfortably.

You wouldn't want to live anywhere in L.A. where the rent is under $700/mo. Trust me on that.

Crap ... i pull in $1900/month here, if it means taking a paycut to live more comfortably w/o worrying about crap as I do now, then I would do it. If the cost of living is lower then I would actually consider it. How much for certain necessities such as food, clothing, etc ...
Is there internet access?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! And it better not be ridiculously high.
