Has anyone here stayed in New York City?

I'll be staying in NYC for four days later this month; I've looked at both regular hotels and hostels, and the argument in favor of hostels, at least for price, are inarguable.

However, I have a laptop for my work that I'll need to keep in a safe deposit box and I'll have business casual clothing (all I'll be able to take with me, really, since I'll be at a firm event the week before) which I'll need to hang up.

Given that, has anyone here been in the same situation? WEre you able to fanagle your way into a hostel, or were the security and space concerns enough to get you to stay in a hotel?

I'm looking at $130 or so for four nights in a hostel vs. $990 for four nights in a hotel.

Have you tried hotels.com? NY hotels aren't typically that expensive if you're willing to go to normal hotels (no Hyatts.. but stuff like Comfort Inn)

Do a little work on hotels/expedia/orbitz.com and you should be comfortably set at $800 for the four nights. Do even more work on Priceline and I stayed at some of the better hotels in NYC these last few years for around $150 a night. This past July I think I landed the Roosevelt for $125 a night.

I personally would just not want to stay in a hostel in NYC...I'll do it when/if I travel Europe, but not in the states.

I dunno.. if you consider Comfort Inn or Red Lion Inn a 'motel' then yeah, I guess so.

I think I'm going to stay at a friend's apartment for two days, then at a hotel for two nights. The two week nights (Sunday and Monday) should only run me $300 or so; it's the Friday and Saturday nights that are expensive ($250+).

if you're looking for a cheap room, stay in staten island and figure out an express bus to take. the express bus will cost you $5 each way and rooms on SI are hellava lot cheaper than the city... there are a bunch of cheap as hell motels on the island that i'd stay in over a hostel in the city. victory motor inn ftw!

when my wife and I visited NY a couple years back, we stayed in New Jersey for about $50.00 a night at a decent hotel.. It took a shuttle ride to a bus station to get to the subway but it was much easier on the pocketbook. Maybe an hour total commute including waiting and such. Prices in NY are just outrageous and I have lived my entire life in LA CA. My wife had lived in downtown and also Jamaica Queens while here brothers live in Jersey. The bus ride was actualy cool because I got to see alot, lol, and go through that tunnel. Two birds with one stone so to say. The hostel thing was a brief consideration, very, very brief. I suggest if your thinking of the hostel, do some research first. Nothing but bad news is all we found and for a kick, even visited the one that was listed at the top of the hostel charts. If your a youngster (out of school) traveling iwth friends then it would be great but if your traveling with more than a backpack, forget about it.

I stayed 3 nights in New York using Priceline. Spent around $180 a night for a 4 start hotel right in center of the city (Times Hotel). I'm sure you can find cheaper for a 3 star or somewhere on the outskirts. I've seen decent ones for aroudn $120 a night. The hotel overbooked so they sent me to Le Parker Meridian (?)... an even fancier hotel and I fanagled my way into a suite. Had to move back the next night which was a pain but hey it was nicer hotel and they ended up comping me that night. I woudln't stay at a ghetto hotel or a hostel in NYC. Rooms are extremely tiny in New York and theres issues with plumbing and elevators often (at least according to tripadvisor reviews).

stay away from NYC. Either go to a remote hotel in the Nassau/border or go to NJ. Take public transportation. no need to spend any more than like 500 tops... and im thinking you can hit 400
