Has anyone here seriously invested time in LinkedIn? Worth it or not?

I have a healthy career/job right now so there's no need for me to use LinkedIn to get a job. What I DO want to use it for is to network and get connections.

Anyone use LinkedIn A LOT? I mean, participate in their discussion forums, ask ?'s, etc. etc etc.

If so, did you receive any value from it or was it a complete waste of time? Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm guessing it's like any other way to make contacts. That is, don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Anyone who uses it "a lot" or any other social networking site probably is jobless for a reason.

Linkedin seems to be pretty pointless for me as an IT consultant. I link up with people and then thats the end of the road. I have never gotten any leads whatsoever on jobs or contracts through the site, except a few obviously broad, spam type recruiter messages.

I guess that answers your question.

Hah, no kidding

I use it as just a digital resume at best. Not that I'm looking or anything, but you never know these days so I keep it up to date. I get regular contacts from recruiters and such (1/month maybe?) so it seems pretty useful if I ever had a bigger need for it.

I don't do any of the discussions though.

I've just built up a load of connections with people I've worked with over the past 5 years. It will only benefit me if I need to recruit contract resource or go contracting myself in the future. So no immediate benefit, but perhaps useful in the future.

I just recently added a lot of connections with current and former coworkers, and I've had 4 recruiters hit me up already even though I'm not looking for new employment.

I use it as my professional Rolodex. Just keep people's info handy in case I need them for something in the future. No real active use.

The best thing about LinkedIn is getting endorsed by people you've forgotten working with for skills you've forgotten knowing.

To me, it's almost just like facebook where it gets to a point where you just add contacts like you do friends but you never really interact with anyone. Recruiters contact/poach you when you aren't looking for a job and when you are looking, it doesn't make sense to start spamming contacts for a hookup either. In the end, it just another internet profile to compare dicks based on how many contacts you have.

I don't have an account on LinkedIn though so I could be completely wrong about this.

Think of it more like an online resume.

In Silicon Valley, a lot of "staying in touch" happens which could lead to future jobs....which it has for my family.

speaking of Linkedin, anyone how "People you may know" is populated?

I really hate that I have a bunch of people I don't want to connect with popping up and vice versa. Is there any connection between my web behavior on Mozilla and that gets sent to Chrome (which I use to log into Linkedin only)?

Does facebook send any data to linkedin as well for this?

I wish I can turn it off so that I'm invisible

I've been passively using LN for the last few years, and lately it got way more aggressive in ads and all kinds of random recruiters contacting you for their openings/etc. With the way things are going, it can easily turn into a spam site. Still worth it to connect with the people you work/-ed with, but I wouldn't use it daily, IMHO.

I add people I know and have worked with but do not look at it often. I did get an message inviting me to apply for a position at another company in town. The message came from the hiring manager, not a recruiter. So I think it can be useful.

I've been contacted regarding job openings, that lead to interviews, that lead to offers on several occasions. It's a useful tool, in my opinion.

I use it as my online address book, and I only connect with people I respect for their work quality. I appear to be the exception.

I do a full blown data dump about once a year from my LinkedIn contacts to my company's recruiters - employee referral bonuses are nice things! And that means my good colleagues may have a chance to decide if they want to do some career development at my company, and then I get to work with a greater number of good quality folks.

A headhunter for Saudi Aramco contacted me via Linkedin. Was flown into Houston for an interview. Offer was tendered a couple weeks following. Didn't agree on some aspects of the benefit package. Declined. But it was an interesting experience.

Nice to see something actually pan out of it though
