Has anyone here had their appendix removed?

I had to have surgery yesterday at 7 am after i had really bad cramps and they did a CT scan that showed it was inflamed. It turns out i had Appendicitis and had to get it removed.I was able to go home yesterday afternoon since i was kind of feeling better, still in alot of discomfort.
Anyone ever go through this? How fast were you back to normal?

Never happened to me. But think of it this way, you just lost weight w/o eating right or excercise. That's gotta count for something.

I had mine out roughly 3 years ago (on Christmas eve no less!) . The diagnosis was a bit... uncomfortable. Instead of a CT scan, they decided to do it the old fashioned way, with some KY and a finger. At least I know what to expect when I get a prostate exam in 10 years. :Q

The biggest pain in the neck for me was that they decided to leave the wound open to heal 'better' and not stitch the outer skin layer up AT ALL . I had to stuff the wound with this gauze soaked with some sort of saline solution... yeah, you really havent lived till you have stuffed a hole in your own stomach with gauze. It probably took about 3.5 weeks for the wound to close up.

Tthe pain itself really didnt last too long, probably about a week and a half to two weeks of it after the surgery. It was mostly when I got up from bed... and it felt mostly like I had just been working out too hard all the time.

I still have mine but my wife had hers removed when she had her hysterectomy. She had malignant tumors and appendicitis at the same. :brokenheart:

The appendectomy was the least of her concerns during recovery so I can't tell you how long it took her to get back to normal. It's been over 3 years now and she's still not back to her old self. Never will be either. :(

Didn't have my appendix out, but did have my gall bladder removed. Recovery took a few weeks. The first 3 or so days after the surgery were the most painful. However, Percocet was my friend. :)

I had mine about a week before Christmas, 1992 (I think - I'm bad with dates).

I had been having stomach trouble for a couple of days, and the pains were gradually growing worse. Finally one night I went to the emergency room, and was promply sent home with "the flu". The next day I was in agony and getting worse. I went to the same emergency room, got a different doctor who recognized that I actually had appendicitis, then waited in a room for about 12 hours while they tried to find time in their scedule to perform the surgery. Finally I got in.

The doctors attempted to remove my appendix laproscopically (sp?), but once they got inside they found that my appendix was "the largest they had ever seen without it being ruptured." So not only did I get two small incisions (one in my navel and one in my pelvic area) from the laproscopic surgery, I also had a 2 to 3 inch incision in my lower right abdomen from the "old fashioned" removal technique.

It seems like it took a good month for most of my soreness to go away, and even then it took a long time (4-5 months) for me to feel completely normal.

I had mine out when I was five.
I stayed in the hospital for 5 days and came home. But my experiences might be somewhat irrelevant because - as the doctors later discovered - my symptoms were not caused by my appendix...
At least I have one less thing to worry about :).
