I went to see an acupunturist for the first time today (thanks to a Groupon deal) in the hopes that she might have a solution for my alopecia since every "Western" doctor I've seen has told me "sorry, too bad."

She stuck some needles into my head to improve circulation (interesting, it didn't hurt) and recommended I do a Dr. Schulze cleanse: Intenstinal cleanse #1, Intestinal cleanse #2, and then a liver cleanse in combination with "SuperFood powder."

I did some research on other colon cleanse products and it looks like there are a TON out there! This will be my first time trying any cleanse of any sort and I definitely want to do so as safely and healthily as possible.

Reviews 1 (Colonix by Dr. Natura, The Perfect Cleanse by Garden of Life, Bowtrol by Ultra Herbal, etc.

More reviews

Has anyone here ever tried a colon cleanse? If so, which one and how did it work out for you?

Pretty sure this is available on Netflix streaming...or it was.

I'll have to check it out. Some of my friends who have tried it swear by it... But "only if used in conjunction with a raw/healthier diet."

A lot of the products are really expensive, so I definitely don't want to do it unless there are definite health benefits.

Chances are it just gives you the shits. You'll only be pooping the contents of your intestines faster than usual.

don't do it... it's pretty pointless. just eat healthier.

I think I eat pretty healthily. A hardboiled egg or egg and spinach omelette in the morning with yogurt and fresh berries, fresh-squeezed celery or carrot juice with a tuna sandwich or leftovers for lunch, pasta with turkey meat and a side of veggies for dinner.

The occasional In N Out burger, but not more than 1-2x/month.

I'm also taking pre-natal vitamins because my doctor recommended them over regular one-a-day vitamins. I'm in pretty good health, I just can't figure out this alopecia thing... The acupuncturist swears by cleanses... colon cleanse, liver cleanse, kidney cleanse, etc. Each "cleanse" averages $75-150, phew. Just wondering if anyone here has given any of them a go and can share your personal experience...

The ladies at the store I went to told me that I should poop at least 3 times a day to be healthy. Their "cleanse" consists of 50 PILLS A DAY... Which are supposedly healthy and good for you. (50 pills a day!!!!) Their premise was that it was all-natural and that your body can really benefit from it, "flush out the toxins," etc.

I'm skeptical. Still researching, thanks for the constructive links so far.

Not much of any effect beyond those of a laxative and a placebo, all at a conveniently inflated price.

ATOT only supports harsh drugs or nothing, no alternatives, organic, etc.
ATOT supports things that actually do something besides act as expensive placebos. Also bulk beef.

You poop. A lot. And it's disgusting. Unless you're having a colonoscopy done, "colon cleanse" is just quack science designed to find and exploit suckers.

Doesn't your colon get a decent brushing from your head being so deep in your ass? Colon cleansing is ridiculous.

I believe in organics to a certain degree... I prefer organic eggs and meat. I am very curious about alternative, Eastern-style herbs and medicines because I don't believe that Western medicine is the only solution. There's so much saturation and noise out there it's hard to discern what's good and what's not, and it must also vary on an individual basis... Just wading through all the info right now.

A lot of the reviews of different products do just tote them as intense laxatives.

You're kidding right?

It has no medical benefit whatsoever. Any benefit is just a placebo. Just eating healthier, and exercise will do it. My brother's an MD and he says it's absolute BS, and just a money grab; just like all homeopathy and other "alternative medicines." He says it can adversely affect your health, and definitely not worth the risk, nor the money it takes away from you.

Alopecia is a genetic thing, possibly autoimmune. What have your docs said to you about it? Have you seen a rheumatologist?

Not kidding, it was recommended to me by an acupuncturist and I figured I'd look into it. Couldn't hurt to research. She's of the mindset that "MD's don't know everything, I had mono for a year and my doctor told me too bad... I was sick for over a year and was determined to learn how to heal myself and others holistically." So I believe there's a certain degree of truth and helpfulness when it comes to non-Western medicine...

Appreciate your brother's feedback, but granted, he's trained in the Western style of medicine and it's a little obnoxious of him to call ALL other "alternative medicines" bs. There are a wide range of Chinese herbs, etc. that help a lot of people, just have to do your research about what works/what doesn't.

It's looking more and more like a colon cleanse might be bs... Still researching though, I haven't closed my mind to alternative therapies and treatments completely.

Colon cleansing isn't "non-western medicine," it's a lie fabricated to sell you overpriced laxatives. It works because people see themselves pooping out terrible smelling stuff and assume, "hey there are all the toxins!" That's not how your intestines work.

There are lots of studies on natural herbs, supplements, and remedies and some of them have been proven effective. There are no such studies for flushing poop out of your colon.

It is complete BS and it shouldn't be lumped in with any other "non-western" medicine because its renewed popularity recently has solely been driven by shady supplement companies making millions of dollars off of it.

I've seen 6 different General Practitioners, all who have said there's nothing I can do and that the cause/cure of alopecia is unknown.

My thyroid was checked, everything was normal.

I saw a doctor at UCLA's main hospital who specializes in alopecia treatment and he suggested a treatment involving shooting needles into my head on a regular basis... With no guaranteed results. I passed, and am hopefully searching for a more organic, less traumatizing solutions. I'll even take a placebo result at this point... Anything in an attempt to find some sort of cure. If I go bald I go bald, but I'm willing to try what I can in the meantime.

where are you experiencing the alopecia? you might need some cortisone injections. contact a dermatologist.

honestly, colonics are pretty pointless.

how long have you been eating healthy? the reason i ask is because, sometimes, if your intestines are used to digesting an unhealthy diet, fecal mater can get kinda pasted between your microvili and decrease your nutritional absorption. that doesn't really happen in the large intestines, though... it's mainly in the small intestines. a good week long detox program should clear it out... and by detox, i mean like a nutritious, home-made vegetable soup-based detox you can do at home for cheap.

i always recommend a superfood/whole food nutritional supplement. google some research on the powder. if it's good, give it a shot. if not, do juice plus. i agree that one-a-day vitamins are crap.

also, i fail to draw any connection between a colon cleanse and alopecia...

edit: http://www.homemadebodycleanse.com/detox-diet/detox-diet-recipe.html something like this. ignore the weight loss crap it talks about. also, i recommend not blending the soup in a food processor. not for any other reason other than you'd probably feel more full by eating the chunks of veggies in the soup.

So LA area? Check here every now and then to see what drug therapy trials are recruiting in your area. Looks like a phase III trial on female pattern baldness by Johnson and Johnson is about to wrap up. So keep an eye out for news related to that.

Also expand the search for other/past trials, and see if you can google the results.
