Has anyone here ever lived in Alaska?

Been mulling over things I want to do in my life, and spending time in Alaska is one of them. I have the opportunity now to work with some Alaska clients and the idea has been poking around in my brain that maybe I should explore the idea of moving up there (Anchorage area).

I'm mid-20s, been working for a few years, single.

Anyone lived there? Do you really go crazy during the long nights?

Never lived there, but commuted there to work (two weeks on, two weeks off). If you get bored easily, don't do it. Beautiful place, though. If you are a loner, it might work ok for you.
Expensive too.

I know a guy who works for big oil that lives up there. He loves it (he's actually from Canada). He is a huge outdoorsman though so the fishing, hiking, camping, hunting, rock climbing, exploring, etc is pefect for him. If you spend most of your time in doors you might as well move to a big city.

I'm a big fan of hiking, actually, and general exploring. I'd like to pick up fishing and eventually hunting. Or maybe just stick to hiking and get into photography.

Hello :D

Edit: Are you a dude? If so, the ratio is bad enough! :p

But, here are some pictures of some of the best hiking you can do 20 minutes from Anchorage! Summers up here are the best.

Yes, I'm a dude. I'd like to meet some interesting, dark haired beauty, but I've heard that the ratio of men to women is pretty even.

Anchorage isn't Alaska.... it's Little Seattle. :)

I live in Fairbanks, so yes, I live in Alaska.

If you come here, get out of Anchorage, that is the only way to see Alaska. Make sure to drive to Denali National Park. Go halibut fishing in Valdez or Homer. Go Salmon fishing... well, everywhere! :p

Lots of stuff to do here, most of it not inside.

I moved up here from La Habra, CA to Anchorage 2 1/2 years ago, and I'm enjoying it so far. I moved mainly to relax, slow down, and just get away from the hectic CA lifestyle.

Winters are kind of rough, but I can deal with it and I think I'm getting used to it. It's all about layering. I haven't wrecked driving in the snow yet so that's a feat in itself. The scenery is absolutely amazing. Lots of stuff to do if your the out-doorsy type. Skiing, snow-machining, camping, fishing, hiking, etc. etc...

I'm getting back into photography, love riding around on my mtn bike, summer bbbq's with friends, going down to Chair 5 in Girdwood for beer and pizza, Memorial Day weekends in Homer, going to Cheena (Sp?) hotsprings in the winter...

I guess the main thing you need to do if you decide to move up here, is get out, meet and make a good group of friends, and explore :) I don't regret it, and I plan to stay up here a while. Anchorage is a big enough town where you don't feel totally out of touch with the lower 48. The cost of living isn't much more than living in southern california. I don't miss traffic, but I guess the biggest gripe I have is the variety of restaurants and food I'm used to from back home.

Moving to Alaska or somewhere cold in Canada is on my list of things to do when I graduate from college.

Case of pepsi $13
Fruit/Vegetables = pricey
Gas = about the same
Rent = $1200 for 2 bedroom place
Scenery = priceless

Very cool but I would not want to live there forever.

I lived there for nearly three years in the early eighties. (Anchorage) I didn't enjoy the long periods of no sun. Even though it was light during the winter, there would be days and days of cloudy weather.

The women seemed to have an attitude too... Sort of a "you can be replaced" attitude. Maybe thats changed or maybe I was a young jerk...

I'd love to go back.. but just for a visit. June and July are the time to go.

You can just live in a tent by Chena and hang out at the hot springs all winter. Otherwise you're going to hav eto learn to love hockey and beer.

I have an ex daughter-in-law down in Kodiak if interested.:evil:
She could not last out of Alaksa for 1 year before she ran back and started bar hopping (only 2-3 bars in the town).

I lived in Kodiak for 3 years and one year in Anchorage. Kodiak is very beautiful if you like the outdoors. Later, my time is over at this kiosk.

If you're into outdoorsy stuff, the Meetup group here is a fantastic way to meet like-minded guys (and girls!). Tons of stuff posted every week!

One of my coworkers used to work in Alaska, he liked it. Great fishing and hunting. Winter is very long. From his descriptions, it sounds like a great place to visit in the short summer months, but not to live there.
