How was the experience compared to coach? Is it bad mannered to ask for more food if you're still hungry?

i got upgraded for free to first class on a flight because they "oversold" coach..

the seats are much nicer.. the food was better...

i didn't ask for more food or snacks, because i didn't want to see to be taking advantage of a free upgrade... but if i paid for it... (and knowing how much those seats cost) HELL YEA i woulda... fuck them if they think it's "bad manners" .. i paid for it.. i'll get what i paid for.

I never fly coach so I can't compare the two. As far as asking for more food, there is nothing wrong with this. I expect excellent service, and if I don't get it, well, the consequences are not pleasant.

A couple times. Once on Continental. That was awesome. Remember Jerry Seinfeld in that one episode where he bumped Elaine to 3rd class and he went up front with the blonde model?
Thats pretty much how Continental treated their customers in the late 90's. I loved it.

A few times on United. That sucked. The only advantage is the slightly larger seat. Everything else was unimpressive.

I haven't flown in about 4-5 years, but first class was a definite improvement over "standard/economy/coach". They greet you by name, you had a dedicated bathroom and flight attendant, you were served with glass for beverages, but still got plastic silverware. At the time where I was flying the jump was about $1500 roundtrip for first vs coach, so I'd generally say it wasn't worth it. But the few times I did fly first (4 IIRC) it was a very pleasant experience. The extra seating room made working on a laptop actually possible.

I flew first class once, when a company was flying me out for an interview and that was all that was available.
I think it was on USAir and I really didn't notice much difference in the service.
The seats were much more comfortable, which is a big deal for me because the part I hate the most about flying is the uncomfortable seats.

But unless I was a multi millionaire or someone else was footing the bill, I don't think I'd ever pay for first class. It's just not worth an extra $500 (or more) for me to be more comfortable for a few hours.

I flew first class from Cincy to Denver on Delta back in 2002/2003. It was great, 2 seats per aisle instead of 3, "leather" seats, all the drinks (alcohol included) I could drink, and the food was mediocre (its airline food), and a hot towel to wash my face. Great service, but I couldn't justify buying a first class ticket myself.

I got bumped up to first class on an international flight to Spain when I was going to visit my girl when she was studying abroad. It was the Spanish airline Iberia, so the stewards and stewardesses didn't really speak english that well, but that was OK.

I didn't even know what was happening because I was waiting to get on the plane and they ran my ticket and it wouldn't accept it. The ticket counter agent didn't speak english so he just points to go stand over there and wait. So I'm waiting then some other dude comes over, looks at my ticket, punches some things in on the computer and runs it through and motions me onto the plane. Ooookkkk. So I get on the plane and show my ticket to the steward to kind of say "Where's my seat?" He points me up towards the front of the plane. I'm like "That way?!?" He nods. So I head up that way and actually look at the ticket and match the seat up to the row and number and sure enough it's first class with one of the seats that fully reclines into a bed, tv/entertainment center built into the armrest/fold away table in the other armrest. I mean, WOW. I felt like such an outsider, but I did enjoy the flight sitting in the lap of luxury. The gorgeous Spanish brunette in the seat next to me only sweetened the deal, lol.

I've flown first class before on Continental. Was a family vacation, and my stepdad flew for work and had a TON of miles with them so we usually got free upgrades. This trip it was him, my mom, and myself flying out to CA from OH. We got 2 of the 3 tickets upgraded to first class for free, so my stepdad let my mom and I fly first class. I was underage so no alcohol, but god was that awesome. Better food (still airline though), leather seats, only 2 seats instead of 3 on each side, recline more, and much more comfortable seats.

Worth the price to upgrade? Not on your tab, but if somebody else is paying for it or it's a free upgrade then yes it's worth it. I've flown enough to not be bothered by coach 95% of the time.

Is these how airliners really made such a profit? The premium is crazy for what you actually get... I mean how much more are they really spending to have you up there? The seats are always there for them. I know they could've put more seats in that space but the cost difference is astronomical.

For shorter flights in CONUS, I'd say fly back in steerage with the rest of the sardines.

But for overseas flights, 8+ hours, I would definitely recommend it!!

I've flown 1st class dozens of times without paying for the seat once. Work the system!

Plenty of times in Business throughout Europe and trans-atlantic, but none in First. However, in October I'm off to Barbados via Virgin Upper Class. WIN!

Edit: On long haul I've asked for more food in regular class. Just ask, the worst that can happen is they say no.

The only time I got to enjoy business class was when I was flying from Thailand to Korea and they overbooked coach, so I got an upgrade. I enjoyed the much wider seats, but I didn't bother to try and take advantage of any perks.

Within the US, I fly coach. Why bother. When flying international, i.e. to Sydney or London, I will pay for comfort.

LAX-SYD in first...
I don't think it was worth the $25k ticket price (I used miles) but it was a very pleasant way to spent 15 or so hours.

Domestic First vs. Intl. First are very different beasts.
