Has anyone had luck getting an early upgrade from Verizon?

My upgrade is due 1/9/14 so I'm only a few weeks away, but my current iPhone is struggling. The battery life is spotty (I think it got messed up when it wasn't charging properly due to lint in the charging port) and now the lock button doesn't work very well.

Anyway, I'm due for an upgrade on 1/9/14. I called a few weeks ago to see about an early upgrade (when the lock button started acting up) and all they could do was offer me the Edge Plan (no!) or a few various Android phones (again, thanks but no thanks).

So has anyone had luck getting an upgrade ahead of time? Did you go in the store or over the phone? What did you say? I'd like to get it this week because I have the time off and well I want it now :)

Are you giving up unlimited? Just say no.

It's too late for that. We had unlimited and my line was out of contract, but my wife's phone met an untimely end with a vessel of water. So to get her a new phone and not cough up $650 we had to sign a new contract and give up our unlimited. I am not pleased, but what's done is done.

But back to the question at hand...

Should have sold the unlimited contract on eBay they go for decent $.

My experience with AT&T was painless, got my upgrade 5 months early with no hassle. Just called them and asked.

How does that work? Not that it matters now. And not that I'd want to turn over my account to someone else.

check your data usage. are you guys going over an affordable data bucket plan? i got 4gb from AT&T and never go over 2GB in a month because of how much i use wifi at home and work. and with hotspots from our cable carrier optimum. i was in court for a bs ticket using my nexus 7 on wifi while i wated for my case to go up. from my cable carrier.

check your usage.

I've got two early upgrades walking into the store. I told them what was going on and asked if they could possible do something before my contract was up. Two different employees were ok with it I just had to buy a couple of accessories. I needed a couple anyways. I have had a couple tell me they couldn't so it's really at their discretion I think.

I called the customer service line and had two lines rolled back 6 months early this year (Aug 2013 from Feb 2014)

We have good luck at work and can usually get upgrades 90 days early unless...

They're iPhone lines. They're pretty hardcore with them. The earliest I've been able to get one is 3 days before the date. They have different rules governing iPhones than they do Android phones or air cards.

Yeah that was the sense I got when I called. If it had been "some" android phones they could have. I didn't ask what phones because I wanted an iphone. Oh well, guess I'll tough it out (first world problems) for 2 more weeks.

At least I know it's not a matter of just saying the right stuff.

If your iphone is less than a year old you can take it to an apple center. They will check the battery and if it's less than 50% then they will give you a new battery free. I hope this helps!

I went to the store and spoke with them on the customer service line. They were very nice, but no dice. They really want to get me on the Edge plan, but I don't want that. What's the point? Maybe I'm missing something but it seems like a rip.

Anyway, guess I'm waiting a few more weeks. I've heard some people have been able to go a week early via Best Buy, so I will investigate that.

Since you were unlimited, they want everyone on unlimited to go onto Edge and get 5gb of data.

I haven't been on unlimited since October when we signed a new contract when my wife broke her phone.

They are pushing the crap out of the Edge plan, but it's a rip. Or at least doesn't offer much to me as far as I can tell. I pay for the phone in installments and then also pay the subsidy built into the monthly service costs? If I was going to do that I'd just pay for a new phone off contract. And if I were 6 months out that's probably what I'd do. But I think at this point I can hold out until January 9.

So I'll add to my own thread...

I was able to upgrade a week early via Best Buy. No shenanigans; I went online, was able to find my account, transfer the upgrade from one line to the other, and then go to the store to pickup the phone.

And what was even better is I saved $75 over Verizon (the phone was $125 vs $199) and used up a few random gift cards I had laying around.
