No, it's no big deal. During the surgery itself (at least in my experience) they put you under IV Valium, so you're conscious but feel no pain and have no memory of what's happened. You get pretty good pain meds afterwards, and as long as you do what they tell you in terms of aftercare (you have to rinse the socket frequently with salt water) it'll heal fine and you won't feel much pain.
EDIT: Actually it really freaks me out to remember that experience, because I just now talked to one of my best friends on the phone and her father just died - I met him for the first time at a party the night after I had my wisdom teeth removed.
Wow you had it good with the valium... All I had was local anesthetic and was wide awake. Had two impacted tooth. The surgeon had to shoot me up, then proceeded to go in there with a knife to remove some gum and went to town... 45 minutes later both my impacted tooth were out in 10s of pieces.
