Has anyone given up on News altogether?

It seems as though many people feel obligated to stay on top of current events, local and abroad, under the tacit societal expectation that in doing so, they will be a better person and citizen in general.

Conversely, it is assumed that one ignorant of the daily abandoned baby, missing and presumed dead toddler, armed robberies, drive-by stray bullet slaying, economic woes, the body count of the War/s, the countless starving and dieing in third world countries and whatever other tragedies the news media wishes to bombard us with, leaves one hopelessly lost and useless in modern society.

Nope, I don't know a fucking thing about what's going on in the world and it doesn't phase me one bit. I keep track on some things like newer renewable energy sources and maybe when a decent drop in crude oil prices drop, maybe even if a celebrity dies. But for most stuff I don't care and don't pay attention.

I hate the news, I try to get my lunch ready at least 5 mins before noon because I don't want to see the "big story at noon" which usually involves what you're talking about in your second paragraph

I don't really care about the news, because most of it is OMG PEOPLE ARE DOING THINGS!!1 I like the traffic reports, they're usually more predictable and easier to listen to.

I heard Ben Stein speak not long ago, he talked about how the media is in the business of selling 'bad' news. It was in reference with the economy and how the traditional metrics show it is not doing as bad as the media says. I would say this carries over to other aspects as well.

The Daily Show and Colbert Report are my "news." They like to show either the hypocritical idiocy of politicians, or the idiocy that's being aired on the major news networks.

Local news - I've never watched. Like the OP says, murders, robberies, vandalism, etc etc, all done up to attract ratings. I just saw a commercial for some local news. "The mystery of the black goo washing up on local beaches has been solved. What is it? Find out at 11."
Well, I'll just trust that it's not going to end all life within 50 miles of the beach, and that they wouldn't withhold that kind of information just for ratings. Oh wait, they would.

No, the news is just absurd. Mortgage bailouts, energy prices, corruption, it's depressing. I vote, but apparently it's impossible to hold civil political discussions anymore. People whine about every little (and big) problem and then whine about every possible solution.

Whenever I do venture out to test the political waters, I come back shaking and terrified.

I listen to NPR and KCBS. I don't watch the news.

I have information feeds constantly streaming.

Of course 95% of it is instantly ignored and only the juicy/interesting/relevant bits are picked up.

I don't have cable (& when i do, i never watch news).

If i see a paper, i might read something of interest in the sports or entertainment section.
