Has anyone experienced a slowdown in with Seti@Home and Win2K?

Hi,

I have an A7V133 with a TBird@1.5GHz and I was getting Wu times of about 4:50h (considering 100 Wu's)in Win98SE.

Now I have upgraded to Win2K SP2 and I am getting Wu times of about 4:58h.

Since I have done about 100 Wus on both systems, I don't think different angle ranges produce this issue.

I have installed the latest 4-in-1's (4.31), but Sisoft Sandra Memory FPU only gives me about 605MB/s at 136MHz FSB. Before it was around 625MB/s.
As I have experienced, those memory scores to have a direct impact on Seti performance, I think this is the problem!

Any help would be appreciated!

I dunno about the AMD's/TBird's but I've found Win2000 to be a little faster than Win98 on Intel chipsets. Win2K/WinNT isn't impacted by the low angle WU's like Win98. SETI is memory intensive so you've probably found the reason. Can you turn up the FSB speed any? How about running the RAM at CAS2?

If it takes dropping the multiplier a little to increase the memory timings that would probably get you better seti times. If you can increase memory timings without dropping your multiplier that's even better.

Is there any reason that win2k would take more memory bandwidth than Win 98se? ,going by his Sandra scores it appears that way.Maybe there are more background processes going on?

You are a real 'hardcore' SETI'er to spot average WU time differences of 8 mins!;)
BTW which team are you on? I didn't spot your name on the TA list.

He's also the guy with access to the supercomputer. :Q He needs to join Team AnandTech now! :)

I think his boss turned down the permission to put the SETI client on the supercomputer. :(

Maybe with a little bribe of some kind? ;)

Win2K on PIII750@1035 in ACPI mode gave me 6:20h for 0.417 AR.
If I installed in Standard PC mode the same WU was done in 6:10h.
That's about 2.5% decrease in time.
It seems the IRQ polling of ACPI introduces a small overhead.

Of course I don't know if you installed in ACPI mode, so I'm just guessing :)

Well, my FSB maxes out at 143 MHz, also I would have to say, that every component of my system is maxed out, so I don't know what's wrong!

Yes I am not on TeamAnandtech, I have my own tiny team, "Die Mathegenies", but am thinking about joining SetiGermany ;) :(, although Anandtech has become my favorite forum, great community!

Yes I have that access, but actually I don't know how to let the client run on this machine, maybe I should not study Electrical Engineering but something like "Seti Optimization and Assimilation".

But I have already assimilated a dual P3-500 machine and two single P3-500, maybe more to follow!

Good to see you're still about:)
I'm planning on installing win2k soonish so I may call on you for help ;)

Well I think that's the only reason you need to join TA ;)

LOL ,that would be more useful in the real world;)hehe
Nice assimilations btw :)

Your Win2K times should be better, I am thinking about converting most of my machines to W2K.
I have two identical machines: CUSL-C, P3-667@710, 256MB@CAS2
According to SetiQueue with over 400 WU between these two machines, I have the following averages:
Name RPD Avg CPU
MOM 2.3 7h55m WinME
server 3.0 7h27m Win2Kpro

The WinME only runs Seti, except for when my wife uses it, 30 minutes a day
The server runs my DirecPc, print server and IP sharing. I went in and made all services manual except for those I actually require.
I use Norton Systemworks 2001 WinDoctor and SpeedDisk to clean up both machines weekly.
