Has anyone ever heard of this? (college application question)

I got a book award from Dartmouth last year, and I'm looking at the application they sent me. Part of it is a peer (ie. friend-they actual put this down, as if people that are applying to an Ivy school can't figure this out) evaluation. Has anyone ever heard of this? I'm also applying to Cornell, and they didn't have anything like this, so it's not as if it's an Ivy thing. I just find it sort of amusing, and a little strange. It's not really a big deal, as I have friends that can are quality writers, but it just seems strange. (Also, I'm a moron, as I already filled out a common ap, don't have a copy, and now have to redo the same thing over again)

No, it's roughly the same as a personal recommendation.
They want one, however, from someone who, while you are on good terms with, are also on equal footing with -- i.e. not a boss or mentor. If you have a good family friend who's known you for a while, that generally helps. Otherwise, just find your smartest and most eloquent bestest buddy and have him write nice things about you.

It serves a couple purposes -- first, that you have friends that value you enough to right something nice about you. Second, if the essay is well written, shows that you are in company of academically qualified individuals. I can safely assume they don't want prospective students that hang around with degenerates. 🙂

Dartmouth=suck. Go to Duke! It's ranked #4, actually has social life, and isnt under 5 feet of snow every year.

i don't think a "comp sci major with a little bit of CE and EE thrown in" is worried about Duke's social aspects...

He should, tho..........there is life outside classrooms, unless he has no dreams of ever socializing, esp. with a lady.
