Has anyone ever heard of "The Devil's Blanket"?

There is horror myth in which someone is sleeping and he/she suddenly wakes up unable to move and speak. The person knows he/she is wide awake but cannot do anything. Then a dark hooded figure appears in the room and laughs. Eventually everything returns to normal.

Supposedly, this happens only to Christians that have weak faith and are being tested. My friend was the first person to tell me this and said it has happened to him and his brothers several times. Last night, another friend told me the exact same story and that its happened to him before as well.

Normally, I am not one to believe in ghost stories but this one brushed upon my doubts.

Has this happened to anyone before?

That has actually had happened to me before, several times if I might add. And yes I am Christian. I didn't think it was called "Devil's Blanket." My mom told me it was a sleeping disorder, where your mind is awake but your body is still sleeping. But one time when it happened to me I couldn't move but I could hear a lady's voice talking in some language that I couldn't understand. I swear I never touched drugs in my life.

Actually I know what you're talking about. In fact, its happened to me before but its not what I was describing earlier. It seems like you're awake and you see your surroundings but you know you're asleep.

It's a fairly common sleep disorder sometimes called sleep paralysis. In the past it has been called "Old Hag Syndrome". Not all of the symptoms are always experienced, but they include paralysis, feeling a "presence" in the room, but not actually seeing anything, seeing an apparition, or other visual hallucinations. It has been reproduced in the lab using electrical stimulation to the brain.

If you want to feel the waking-sleep part (without the paralysis), try this: as you're laying in bed trying to fall asleep, put both arms straight up, bent at the elbows (your elbows resting on the bed). As soon as you fall asleep, your arms will likely drop. If it's enough to wake you up, you will still be in the initial state of unconciousness, but awake enough to be aware of your surroundings. Sometimes you see some freaky stuff. :)

For those of you have experienced this, do you ever feel as though your bed is tilting . . . and you are sliding toward the edge? :Q

Yeah, same here. Except when my eyes open, Martha Stewart is there. She is wearing a thong and lacy bra from Victoria's Secret, as she glues gold glitter onto pine cones being tacked onto a wire form for a Christmas Wreath.

I cannot move. She touches me. There. I tell her "no, Martha....the Beegoo Wax Man is watching..." She goes away.

I cannot understand this.

All of you are whacked in the head. The human mind is an incredibly complex machine with no moving parts. We've all had dreams that we'd bet our life were real. In dreams, you can see, hear, smell, taste, feel and even have a dream within a dream. You are all over-reacting to very normal brain activity.

"Devil's Blanket" my @ss...yet another scare tactic dreamt up by the Bible Toting Fundamentalists.

Puh-leese.

ps
I used to have those "bed tilting and me sliding off the edge" dreams all the time. I would fight the fall, becoming terrified. Years ago, I learned to control that dream by just realizing it was a dream. Now when I fall off, I can fly around in my dream. Unfortunately, I still cannot control "those dreams". Christie Brinkley ala 1986 or so is still not a reality. :(

The dream by it self is no beggie because then it will only be a normal scary dream (Nightmare) but the paralysis in effect makes it that much more f...up

The dark hooded guy is named Ralph. Nice guy actually, albeit a little misunderstood.

The old Devil's Blanket and other stories was simply made up to explain something that nobody could understand back then.
