has anyone ever dealt with plycon.com?

They are getting a rating of 6.7 out of 7.0 on Resellerratings.com, which is top-notch: http://www.resellerratings.com/vendone.cgi?PlyconComputers. The PEP66 is a dynamite cooler, it is the best mainstream socket-type heatsink I am aware of and kinda overkill unless you are running a peltier. Be aware that it is not necessarily going to fit on a socket-type motherboard, it is more at home on a slocket adapter.

If it were me, I'd get the quieter fan... with a heatsink that size, you can probably afford to give up some CFM. 🙂
 
Plycon is ok, but their prices are a little high to me. You can get the PEP66 for alot cheaper at http://www.subzeropc.com. The Shipping is cheap and fast too.

I got a PEP66 a few weeks ago and it lowered my CPU temp by 14`F. Pretty impressive if you ask me. The PEP66 is for Flip Chip CPUs (AKA FC-PGA). the pal603x is NOT for FC-PGA CPU's. The FC-PAL603x is for FC-PGA. It is basically the same thing as the PAL but modified for FC-PGA. It looks like this http://www.subzeropc.com/store/alphafcpal35.htm . Overall the PEP66 is a better cooler though and it should work on your Abit MB.

 
DO NOT GET a PEP66 for hte Abit SL6. You're better off getting an ALPHA pAL35t. THe PEP66's are not designed for use in socket mb's.

THe PAL35t won't underperform the PEP66 by much.

Mike, why is it not good to use on a socket MB? I use one on my Celeron2 socket MB and it works great. Some MB's have capacitors in the way, but if not it should work fine.

The FC-PAL is a good heatsink too though. either way you cant go wrong. 🙂

 
dabuddha, it really depends alot on your system. For me it made a huge difference, but some ppl's dont see a major change in their systems. Either way though it should perform better than the Orb.
 
You were asking about flip chips:

The FC-PGA format is the newer format where the CPU is bare and not encased in one of those black plastic cartridges (SECC for Slot1 boards). The bare chip fits directly into the Socket 370 socket on any Intel 815E based mobo. I believe that all the Celeron II's come only in this format. The flip chip is the way to go 'cause it's more versatile - it'll fit a Sockec 370 mobo directly or a Slot 1 board with a 'slocket' adapter.

But, I think that instead you should get a Pentium III Coppermine in the FC-PGA format and from the recent cB0 stepping. You can get a 600E or a 650 for about the same as the Cele you're looking at if you shop around. And when overclocked the Coppermine, especially a cB0, will outperform the overclocked Cele. Cele fans get mezmerized by the overclocked MHz and neglect to look at the benchmark results. The Cele was the way to go once a while back, but its hayday has past. It just takes people a while to realize it (or admit it). You have a nice up to date board there - get a CPU to match.

If you only have a $100 to spend on the CPU, then get a Cele II. But if you can go $200 - $250, then go Coppermine. And why change from a 566 to a 600 - that doesn't sound smart to me at all. The difference is insignificant.

AnandTech tests have shown that a Cele II 566 at 850/100 is bested by a stock P3 600E at 600/100 in most benchmarks !!

Well, most socket mb's aren't gonna fit with the PEP66. From my experience, at least the 7Vca Soyo will not fit a PEP66. That, and the exhaust is pointing, usually, into a wall. For a socket mb application, a pal35t is better, easier to use, and you don't run into the chance that it will hit a capacitor or what not.

I just think its better not to risk getting a pep66 and seeing it not fit, and just grabbing a pal to avoid potential conflicts 😉. Of course, if you have a PEP66 handy to test out, by all means, they're great heatsinks and I have one, but on a slotket.

the situation about the cpu's is i ordered the 600 for my friend so i can chose which one i want to keep
i have a 550E p3 also which i was able to only go up to 620
when i get my new motherboard i might try oc that
