my college PC lab used gutters for cable management, not a bad idea at all, I might incorporate that in

at 4% alcohol?

doubt it, brah. You could just drink 2 or 3 real beers that real men drink and get the same drunkenness it would take you with a case of Ultra.

Guinness extra is also weak--about 5.2%, iirc.

just saying.
That's a lota drinkin' for someone that drives thousands of miles a month.

To the question, this looks like a reasonable cheep solution:

The stand for my 150g aquarium isn't that heavily built, and I think it's holding a bit more weight. ;) Personally I've always been a fan of framing out a top, then covering the top and attaching legs to the bottom.

I rarely drink more than 1-2 beers anymore but when I do my drink is a fifth of Chimay Blue. 750ml at 9% sure does a lot for "one" beer

So I'm a mechanically inclined person, with design experience but nothing wood or furniture related, and while I used to watch woodworking shows all the time growing up, I've forgotten all of it but am thinking about picking it up as a hobby in my new house, so I'm using CAD at work to design stuff with what simple knowledge of boards and while I think I have everything else structurally pretty good, I have a couple questions about the actual desktop and your finish

I was thinking about how I was going to do the desktop, then I realized I have no idea how they would best be made. Originally I was thinking multiple nice hardwood 1x6 or 1x8 tongue and grooved + glued together, with some finish nails into 2 2x2's perpendicular underneath, and finish nailed to the base, all nails set and puttied over or whatever. A nice large bevel around. Does that sound right? It seems like too much maybe. I do want something nice hardwood, well sealed and almost glossy, solid and well lasting. Something that won't be peeling off after a couple years of my elbow always resting on the same spot. What species did you use?

Could I more easily get the same thing with a high quality hardwood plywood or something? Or are there good veneers maybe even? I actually thought about putting like a granite top on

And on your finish, what did you use? I know that there are several things you can do to wood, seal, treat, finish, stain, varnish, etc, but I have no idea what each one is except for stain.

Also, it looks like for the legs and stuff are more like a 2x4 ripped in half then planed so actually like 1.25"x1.25", is that correct?

I wouldn't want to lean on that..even if it were anchored to a stud.
