Has anyone ever been to a desert party?

EDIT (in case you don't make it to the bottom): Does anyone have a sleeping bag or a tent I could borrow for Friday-Sunday? 🙂 EDIT: Thank you NeuroSynapsis! 😀

I'm going to my first one this weekend.

My friend just sent me this e-mail in preparation:

Here is a chant or prayer I've lifted off the forums. it gives you a hint as to what the mood of the event will be like..a spiritual gathering for many there. The person who posted this was asking us to utter something of a prayer on the way to the gathering, to bless the event.

--------

thank you spirit for walking with us as we moved toward the gathering and for making the 10 year anniversary happen as it should, without expectations and bringing us into awe, gratitude, and joy for the gift of a space to celebrate the night, goddess luna, grandmother moon, mystery through music, dance, joy, love, strength, unity, hope, sky, earth... thank you spirit for giving us a decade of moontribe and always sharing with us the whispering wisdom of those who came before and who will continue to come.

we are the ancients and we honor all our relations.

thank you spirit for giving us this open range to move foward in transformation and conquering the illusion walls... for the hurdles we struggled over.. stretching our minds and legs as we leaped in faith, rose above them and understanding that they are all lessons toward appreciation that may help us shake out any doubt of our power to create and come together .. when our intentions are for the love of our tribe and the
world around us.

thank you for the off da hook party... as we continue the tradition of human celebration through dance, music, sharing, and ritual.

1) tent (plus air mattress). You can bring any kind of sleeping gear..we usually just line our tent with blankets and pillows from home.
2) camping chairs/recliners for sitting
3) icebox, (beer, food, etc)
4) gas-powered stove plus pots & pans. We want to get a grill this time and bbq up some spare ribs out there.
5) toiletries (deodorant, q-tips, toothbrush, facial and body wipes to substitute in the place of a shower)
6) water
7) propane lantern
8) firewood (though they usually prohibit personal fires..only community fires allowed
9) sunblock!!!
10) toilet paper
11) trash bags
12) plastic cups, forks, plates
13) canopy, for shade (very important, tents block wind and leave you to fry in the daytime).
14) headache medicine like advil

Basically any kind of camping gear. Honestly a generator would be very handy to have out there.

For fun, I'm bringing a kite and maybe some pinwheels to stick around our camp. Anything to dress up the camp and give it a colorful and playful look is cool. You'll see that most of the attendees will dress up their campsites or themselves...with artwork, stuffed animals..dolls.. lights..flowers..candles..etc. The more creative, the better.

finally, (it goes without saying) comfortable clothes for dancing, getting dusty, climbing and hiking. any kind of tennis shoes or comfy shoes. I sometimes wear flip flops in the day time. I'd recommend cargos and comfortable khaki like material..shorts if you like those..or a skirt..Any of that light weight material you see from kikwear is PERFECT for the hot dry terrain and scraping wind. At night, you'll need to pack really warm
clothes..just in case. It can get freezing out there, though now it's june, but I've been out there where it was around 40 degrees.

Many of the attendees will be very hippie..wearing tye-dye/bohemian wraps, big feathered jackets, colorful flowers, scarves..sunglasses..you name it, you'll see it. shocking clothes on guys... like a rave, but more practical given the crazy desert elements. You will LOVE all the color and attire around you. It will inspire you so much, I promise. The look is very new age out there..color and costumes are a big thing out there. I think I might bring a fuschia tulle skirt that I"ve never worn but found for cheap one time at a store and wear it out there. It's perfect..I won't care getting it dusty and it'll flow and add color to the landscape.

You'll want to get your hair out of the way after the first night in the desert, so I mostly use a head scarf or I'll twist my hair up into buns.

That's all (don't worry about responding to all this, I just wanted to send you a preparatory list).

The problem is... I've NEVER been camping before, and this is a 3-day trip in the middle of a desert. I don't have a tent or a sleeping bag... of the above list, all I have is a plastic reclining chair, charcoal stove, post and pans, toiletries, water, and sunblock.

Does anyone have a sleeping bag or a tent I could borrow for Friday-Sunday?

If i was younger, this would definitely sound cool. But nowadays, it's just 'blah'. Maybe i'm getting too old.

for the desert party (more commonly known as a rave), don't forget your club drugs.

This is my attempt to fight off the "blah." 🙂

I met a fabulously fun girl who's sweet, smart, and random... and am thrilled to have met her, as those are few and far between in this city. She's in law school right now, razor sharp, and hella funny... here's the last paragraph of another e-mail she just sent, which had me laughing out loud...

"Anyway, on a lighter note (I am much too serious, I know), they served picnic food there..and it gave everybody the shits. They had a big pot of weird bean soup and I ate some and had diahrrea the next day..I had to take 4 dumps! It sucked. I've spent the remainder of this week farting my ass off..the newly married couple stayed over before flying off to europe and we ordered italian food and my lactose intolerant self farted all
day as a result..then i ordered a latte from the coffee bean and forgot to have them use soy instead of milk so i farted silently in class all night.

Before this degenerates into a fart letter, I'll stop."

I love her already... 😀 She's the most beautiful Asian girl, too... I'll have to invite her and her boyfriend to the next meetup... 🙂

Uh... I don't think it'd be too safe doing "club drugs" in the desert. 😵 We're going to be miles upon miles away from any hospital/civilization... and doesn't MDMA result in severe dehydration?

Hope you have nothing against drugs... but hippies are the best to be around when you're stoned. I don't like them personally when sober, but to party with, they're fun as hell... i had a good friend that was a hippie.

As for MDMA resulting in severe dehydration... well, itself it doesn't cause dehydration (i don't think), it's just that clubbers dance for so long that they forget to drink sometimes.

Yeah, cause if you are doing X i am sure you are concerned about your health. Safe has nothing to do with it.

So, are you walking into the desert, making you miles away from everything, or are you driving in??
(I'm assuming driving, since they recommended bringing campfire wood)... So, it's no big deal at all.

I'm chaperoning a camping trip for about 12 students at my high school this weekend... 2 days out, but they'll be 12 miles from the nearest road when they're camping. And... if they want anything with them for those two days, they better be prepared to carry it on their backs for those 12 miles.

Having the car there with you is great, since it's your first time... if you forget anything, and you will, you can either borrow some from someone else, or else hop in the car and return to the city to get some.

p.s. I have both that you can borrow! But, you probably live too far away... (since I'm no where near any desert)

omg...sounds like a burning man event. i'm open to ideas but this one is even too strange for me. i'd lend you my sleeping bag but that's what i use for my bed atm. my tent is a little complicated to setup (wish it was as easy as my friends popup tent) so i doubt you'll want to borrow that. all i can say is...good luck and have fun! please report back with your adventures.

if you edit your post to "does anyone want to share a sleeping bag with me... you bring the bag" I bet you'll get a better response. 😛

Burning man event? *curious*

Thanks neovan... that's very kind of you, but I wouldn't want to deprive you of your bed! I'll report back with details, currently talking to a very kind ATOT member who I may drive 1 hour (there, 1 hour back) to see tonight to treat him to dinner and pick up gear. 😀

Looks like there will be a lot of alcohol, sex, drugs, hEAVy use of GaNjA. You're from CALI right? It figures. =)

I have a sleeping bag or two rolled up in the garage. Each has weatherproof nylon outside, and flannel lining on the inside. Guaranteed to leave you warm no matter what the temp drop.

Also have a tent that's my parents', but from previous experience has been a bit of a bitch to setup and, well... looks like it's out of the 70's cuz it is. 😛

I could loan you both so long as you don't get any alcohol, barf or other bodily fluids ( :Q 😉 ) on it. But I'm all the way over here in Bellflower, and seein' as I'm behind on some homework and studying my ass off for an exam Thursday evening (summer class--NEED an 'A' here), I couldn't manage a trip to your place until late Thursday/early Friday at the very least unfortunately.

Either way, hope you have some mega fun. Level-headed as you are, I know you'll stay off dem drugs. Let us know how it goes. 🙂

When we moved to our new subdivision we were invited to one by one of our neighbors. Turned out the "Desert Party" was just a cover for what was supposed to be an engagement party. Apparently the engaged broke off their wedding plans, but the mother of the would be bride wanted to have the party, so they called it a "desert party". Needless to say, I didn't go.
