ha ha... guilty as charged. i like to think of myself as a robin hood type of thief though. ;)

Robin Hood stole things to give to poor people who needed them. You steal non essential products because you're lazy, cheap, and worthless.
And in the end, it only makes everybody poor.

i don't see how you can back up the "worthless" statement.

The conclusion is self-evident; I don't need to back it up. Nobody needs music to survive, yet thieves concoct all sort of ways to sidstep the real truth-they just don't feel like paying for it. That excuse doesn't work for car thieves, a concept that seems to elude most of the logically challenged music thieves.

that makes you worthless.. how?

you do need to back it up, saying otherwise just makes it evident that you can't. i wouldn't be talking about "logically challenged" if i were you.

What do you want, graphs and diagrams? On the most literal level, people who take from society without putting back in are exerting a negative drain.

how do you know they are not giving back to society? there are more ways to give back to society than paying for a cd, you know. unless you meant to say that these people are simply worthless to record companies.

and i would like to see an (at least) semi-coherent, relevant, explanation of how you can determine these people are worthless based solely on the fact that they download pirated music.

I do, but I'd also like to hear what they sound like first.

Replace record companies with artists and maybe you have a point.

And I'm not sure what else you want from me. As a society we have formed a heirarchy of what is acceptable and what is not. Stealing is not acceptable. I consider criminals to be of no worth to society. If they were to be removed until such time as they die or are rehabilitated, society will benefit. It is entirely possible that he is worth something to his family, but since all I know is that he apparently enjoys thievery I made my statement based on that.

your theory depends on the assumption (which could easily be false) that the criminals take more from society than they give. edison was basically a thief, but one could argue that he was not worthless because he popularized certain technologies. "worthless" implies there is no net worth to be gained from that individual, and i just don't see how you can make that conclusion based on the posts in this thread. this has nothing to do with whether or not stealing is acceptable, or whether or not they are criminals.

If your true purpose is try before buy, then I guess I can accept that.

if the RIAA or whatever takes away file sharing in general, then I say we get 100% full money back guarantees on music we buy and don't like.

Why do I say that? -- because the RIAA is an illegal collusive oligopoly and it's our duty as consumers to realize that and destroy them financially. Capitalism needs to remain capitalism. Oligopolies are not capitalism.
haha! You gotta love the kiddies who just passed ECON 101. They love using the new words they learned, oligopoly is just plain fun to say!

Sorta like someone who just completed PSYCH 101 and goes around trying to psycho-analyze everyone.
So are oil companies, why arn't you out stealin gas?
lol! Exactly.

There is no viable economic model that can compete with "for free". If people could drive off with a new car without paying for it, without risk of getting caught and being prosecuted, indeed the ONLY consequences they would face are those imposed by their own conscience, very few people would actually be paying for cars.

Even if the price of cars were reduced significantly, why pay one dollar for something you can get for free? The price would have nothing to do with the fact people en mass would be driving off with free cars and reducing the price wouldn't entice anyone to pay for the car who wasn't inclined to, anyway. Of course, those who are questioned or challenged about their practice of driving away with 'free' cars would resort to the exact same rationalization above (I'm fighting evil greedy oligopolies therefore its ok).

No viable economic model can possibly compete with 'free'.

In defense of the RIAA (crap, I never new I'd say that!), there are those in this thread who are stealing, and that is definitely wrong. There are no excuses for their actions.

However, the other things (CBDTPA) that the RIAA is trying to force upon us all to restrict when, where, and how we listen to their "content" is almost as bad. Although from one point of view, it is essentially stealing (them stealing our rights from us, that is), IMNSHO it does not justify our stealing from them. A better choice would be not to buy CDs at all, though apparently some people value their entertainment more than their rights and freedom, so they would never consider an option like that. :frown:
