I was trying to patch all these wonderful security holes, and when I go to windows update it goes slow and sometimes just times out and sits there. If i close it, the browser still stays open and starts pegging my cpu at 99%. I found the actual update and downloaded as a file, but windows update is so convenient most of the time.

Join the club. As I'm writing this, I have been downloading (via dsl) from the xp website for the last 7 hrs. I finally got the security updates installed and am now starting on windows updates. They must be having server problems, or are just overloaded.
I service pc's for a living and have noticed this slow down from time to time, it usually only lasts a few hours, but today seems to be particularly bad. Hang in there, or just wait untill tomorrow.

Good luck

With my first installation of XP, I had a hardware problem where the old sound and video card wasn't compatible. After replacing them, everything worked fine. With my second and third installation of XP, everything worked great. Over all, I'm pleased with XP.

I have had that same issue with two laptops and XP. THing just sometimes hangs and then times out. I guess MS needs some more bandwidth....:D
