I've had three external Maxtor drives go out on my in the past 4ish years, and I'm starting to not like them. Don't get me wrong, the drives in them are excellent, imo, but the enclosures seem to have problems lasting. Has anyone else had bad experiences with them?

I'm not a fan of brand name external drives. I prefer to choose an enclosure with the features I want and a decent design/cooling solution then put whatever drive I want into it.

This is probably one of the weakest chain in the link when using external hdd, enclosure cooling! Regardless of brand name of the hdd, the enclosure has to be able to dissipate enough heat to keep the hdd cool. So if you use your ext hdd for large data or continously, buy an enclosure with a cooling fan on it. Or if you already have one, try some mod to either install a cooling fan or attach a regular hdd cooler. Heat is hdd killer although WD seems to be more tolerant compare to maxtor.

Cooling is important, but i'm not fan of active cooling solutions in these enclosures. They tend to be a litte noisey and prone to failure.

Maybe look into an intelligently designed enclosure that's made of aluminum, it will help trasfer the heat away from the drive.
