If you're handy, then you can do a lot on your own, but it's very, very time-consuming. I'm almost done remodeling a house, which included a lot of cleaning, redoing all the floors (and some of the subfloors), painting, installing light fixtures and switches, fixing some plumbing and electrical, putting up a 300' privacy fence, painting, etc. The only thing I didn't do on my own was install carpet and paint the siding and trim (I painted the porch and porch rails and all the interior). It took many more hours than I thought, so that's something to take into consideration. Shopping around for materials (and possibly labor) is another biggie. I got a steal on my carpet and found a good, but inexpensive installer, and it cost me $1.21/sq. ft. for new carpet, padding, and installation including tax! If you're going to get new appliances, keep an eye on various deals forums. I've seen some incredible appliance deals on there.
