Has anyone dealt with the BSA?

I just got back to my desk and my Network Supervisor left a printout for the Business Software Alliance's free Gasp software audit tool. He wrote "Please look into this!" on the bottom.

So, has anyone tried this software? I'm 99% sure we're totally compliant with our software (Microsoft makes lots and lots of money off us), but I have no desire to invite BSA to do a full audit any time soon. I know there was a legal warning in the UK recently to not give the BSA any information if they mailed someting to a company.

Is registering for this free "tool" just an invitation for trouble, or is it a good idea??

I never saw this, but I've heard the "amnesty" ads on the radio. Let me think about this. I know I'm not compliant, so I'll call the BSA up and TELL them I'm not so that they can dictate the timeline by which I have to get compliant.
Why do I get the impression that the amnesty period is probably similar to the "lag time" it takes between when you file a lawsuit and when it actually makes it to court?

I wouldn't say a WORD to the BSA. There are plenty of ways of auditing your enterprise for license compliance and at least you won't be getting them from the company which is going to sue you when they find out your not compliant.

If you think you're compliant, you need only worry if they come after you, usually when someone reports you. I still recommend auditing your licenses and making sure you're fully-compliant just in case.
But I would never volunteer information to the BSA. They aren't a law enforcement agency, thy're just another greedy business.
