Has anyone created web pages, streaming clips, MM work on a laptop?

If you have, then you have probaly already gone thru the analysis stage that I am
at.

Looking for a laptop probaly IBM Thinkpad(T40, T40P, A31) or Dell D800 for both
business and some lite to medium MM production work like:

* Webpage development
* Content mngt
* Capturing images including a/v, editing, encoding and creating short 30-60
second clips.
* Database mngt(images etc)

In gaming, the graphics card seems to be one of the important factors ie how much
video ram, onboard processor and drivers written for gaming.

I am wondering what the key componet/components are for multimedia ie in order
of priority:

* Which CPU and which minimum speed?

Have heard the P4 has strong MM abilities, but do not know what this means. Also,
the new PM 1.6 chip ie for laptops generally outperforms or equals similar P4's.

* Amount of System Ram (Is 512k enough or does it matter how much video ram I have?)
* Hard drive access speed ie 4200 vs 5400
* Graphics card (for thinkpads there is the radeon 9000 32mb/64 bit and ATI Fire GL
64MB/128). Dell D800 offes Nvidia 4200 Go 64/126, but the laptop is not as high quaility
or as fast in biz apps and wireless and less portable.

I know screen resolution and storage factor into this, but these things can be
added externally. If you have thoughts on this ie the graphics card, much appreciated.
I may have a follow up question to.

Trying to figure out if a fire GL with 64/128 would be better than the "radeon 9000 with
only 32mb/64 bit data path, but may be more geared to MM. The GL which is more for
cad may miss the mark unless these mm apps can make use of the GL's 64MB video
ram and the 128 bit data path which is significant it would seem.

thx!

Unless you're creating 3D content, which you're not, you don't need a hardcore 3D chip. A Mobility 7500 is probably just fine. An M9/gFGo 4200 is overkill. A Mobility FireGL is ... well, you've got too much money.

I don't know why you want to develop on a laptop, so I won't ask "why not a desktop"?

In order, you probably want to look at:

RAM
Multiple images, Photoshop, etc, all suck RAM. Minimum 512MB.

Hard drive
Here's your chokepoint for mobile development. Laptop drives are typically only 4200rpm - 5400 if you're lucky. They're going to slow the hell out of you and make you wish you bought a nice desktop rig with a SCSI RAID 0+1.

CPU
Not really as much of an issue, as you're only making short clips. If you were encoding 2 hour movies, this would be more important. But it's not.

512mb should be enough if you're doing small clips.. but the more the better.
Go for 5400 RPM.. you'll need all the speed you can get, laptop HD's are slow compared to desktop ones.
If you're not doing games or anything, just messing with videos, you don't need the FireGL or the 9000. Grab a mobility 7500.

Are you traveling a lot? If not, a desktop system would be far superior in almost every way, here.

* Amount of System Ram (Is 512k enough or does it matter how much video ram I have?) now i dont think 512k would be?
