I built my deck with a friend and it wasn't that hard. I'm not that experienced with building anything, but I did learn alot. Our deck is 18' x 21'. We used 4x4's for the posts, 2x12's for the ledger and the joists. For the decking we used Trex, composite material is the ONLY way to go. Absolutely no maintenance and no splinters. Our railing is made of aluminum covered in vinyl. Nothing to maintain there either. The estimates we got ran from $13,000 - $17,000. I did it for $3,300.

I may look into using the composite material for the decking itself, but I dont know at this point. Our house has aluminum siding and is white, so I do have to somewhat go with that as well.

We currently have a concrete slab patio on the back of our house which is not used very often because it's not very nice anymore...

The steps and platforms are cracking and in need of replacing.

Fix the steps and be done with it. Make some nice, wide, sweeping steps up to a decent sized landing. Make it large enough to accommodate a grill. You've got a patio, use it for what it was made for! It won't fade, splinter, heave or require railings. Put some planters, or beds around the perimeter and it will look fine, save money, require no maintenance and last forever.
