Has anyone broken a mobo?

Just wondering how delicate the mobos are .... I was fitting my IDE cables and PCI cards yesterday ... and observed that sometimes it becomes quite 'force intensive' to insert/remove them. Is there an risk of mobo breakage? Had anyone had this experience!

I have had these same issues in the past where I am putting in IDE cables and what not and the board will flex and bend but it has ALWAYS worked fine. I even one day tried to break an old Mobo and could not do it with my own strength.

That's a great consolation ... it always scares me to flex my muscles in sensitive areas!

The danger of flexing is cracking a solder joint. For that reason it is important to have 6 or 7 support posts in position and fastened. By and large mobos are pretty tough.

Sounds reasonable .... but how about the PCI or IDE sockets ... are they secure tight enough to the mobo?

You can also make invisible cracks, very very small. But I've never seen any!;)

Yeah I've never had a problem, they build the boards for it right?

I remember seeing a test over at Thermalright some time ago. They put one of their heatsinks on a processor/motherboard and put it in a case and then dropped it from the second story(?) of their office. Everything survived except the case if I recall correctly. Just thought I'd toss in another example of how hardy some computer components can be.

BTW, PC Magazine used to do hardware survival tests on laptops a long time ago. I don't know if they still do it or not, but it was pretty amazing what they would do to those machines and yet they still continued to work even after all the abuse.

I destroyed a motherboard once.

Granted i drilled a hole through it, I thought it was the support for the case, not the middle of the motherboard! :(

But never broken one in normal use, and I've been pretty harsh with them (and scared a few of my friends in the process, too ;))
