Has a previous engagement ever prevented you from landing a job?

I've got a really good chance at landing a good 6 month contract (possible full time hire) job. However, I just recently got married, and my wife and I planned our honeymoon for June 12th-18th. We've booked the vacation a couple months prior.

Before moving too far forward, I just notified the recruiter I'm working with on this job, but I'm pretty worried that something like this will automatically disqualify me for the position. Have any of you ever experienced this, and what did you do? How did it turn out?
 
I hired someone who had a planned vacation 2 weeks after I hired him. No big deal as I knew ahead of time.
 
I got arrested the night before a big job interview. I was in jail when I was supposed to show up...lol

I miss my youth. :'(
 
I also have hired employees who disclosed a planned holiday. It did not effect my decision, but I would have been pissed if they hadn't disclosed it before hiring.
 
I lost a PT contract once when the job I had at the time made us stay an extra 20 mins to look for the bosses flashdrive (she thought someone stole it, was in her purse all along *I dont know how it ever got there*....). Missed the appointment, pissed off the company, no contract.

Nothing like losing an extra 300$ a week for stupid reasons.
 
When I got this job I had a prior planned week long vacation that was the week after they wanted me to start. I offered to push the start date until after the vacation but they just had me start and then take the week without pay since I hadn't built up any vacation time yet. Wasn't a big issue.

I'd be perfectly willing to do either of those. It sounds like their decision won't be until end of May, early June anyway, so I could always offer to start when I get back, or just start early and take the time off unpaid. I'm just concerned about being able to go, and still getting the job as well.

Glad to hear so far that you guys have generally been fine with pre-planned vacations, or hired someone who has disclosed one. I feel really bad about the timing, but with timeshare option we have, the timing window was pretty huge and unpredictable.
 
Well, you gotta figure they want to hire you for a reason. Usually a week isn't going to be an issue unless it's a time sensitive project they are specifically hiring you for maybe.

I'd offer both options and see what they say, just tell them the truth that you had your honeymoon planned already, I'm sure they'll be fine with it.

I had already purchased plane tickets and hotel rooms when I got a job offer from a company. When I negotiated with them, I told them the vacation plans and they had no problems letting me take it.
 
Should not be a problem as long as your up front with everybody. Any company that would let a pre booked honeymoon trip of 1 week affect their judgement regarding hiring a prospective employee is probably not the kind of company you would want to work for anyway.
 
Awesome, I just heard back from my recruiter and she talked to the company, they said it was no problem 🙂

Whew! That's a major load off my mind.
 
Update... the company came back and said that my honeymoon will now cut into their training period, which will start June 1st, and will last until June 22nd. I asked if there was any way to push it back or split it up, and they said no. I asked if I was able to change my honeymoon to a later date, say starting June 24th, if that would work. They said yes.

I called up my bookie regarding my reserved date and asked if I could bump the day back or switch to a similar nearby place. They said I should be able to, so I asked if I could tell my recruiter this, and they said yes, so I did. Both my recruiter and bookie should be calling me back this afternoon...ugh. I hate the wait and this feeling. I hope everything works out.

Ok, but I just got married, I'd like to save money for a house, and medically insure my family, neither of which I can afford to do at my current job. This new place will be 50% more pay + full benefits, with a promotion chance within 6 months. It also seems like something I would enjoy a lot more than what I'm currently doing.
 
Still not getting any better. So now apparently my bookie can't find any alternate dates or places for my honeymoon, even though I was assured it wouldn't be a problem.

It looks like it may come down to me making a choice...bailing on the job, or bailing on my honeymoon. This has honestly been the best offer I've had in the past two years...really stressed out over this.
 
My cousin will be taking her honeymoon eight months after they get married. They are saving money and working around her job. Do what you gotta do, man.
 
Bail on the honeymoon but only if you have full buy in from your wife on bailing on the honeymoon and taking a 6 month contract when you've not gotten anything else in a 2 year period.
 
Bail on the honeymoon, there's plenty of time to get it worked out and reschedule it for this summer.

I do the hiring for people in my department at my current job, it is not a big deal.

1) There is a guy still working here today that was hired, and the first month while employed did not show up for work, because his child got sent to the hospital. He's still here a year and half later, and is a good employee.

We realize sometimes things happen and come up. He even offered to quit and reapply later when his kid was ok... But we told him no.

2) Another guy I disqualified because of not starting right away because something just seemed fishy with the dude. He had a high paying job in another state $75,000+, and quit and came here to be with his girlfriend, they got engaged apparently. But after arriving, supposedly they broke up immediately like the same week... But he didn't want to start for at least a month. a) he said he brought nothing here with him, so why didn't he just move back to his state, and contact his old job, b) his story seemed odd to begin with, c) he didn't want to start right away, d) his old job he said he was paid this much and was hired at this amount, but had less than a year experience and just no way... These positions just dont pay that amount brand new out of school with no experience.

Just say you have a honeymoon, and they should be ok with it.

Most people will completely understand this and I don't see this being an issue at all.
