harvesting an AIM password

I have a client who has forgotten her AIM password (I've given up on asking why or how these things happen) and no longer has access to the e-mail address she registered it under. Therefore, having AOL send the password to that e-mail addy doesn't help anyone too much. Is she SOL, or is there a way I can dig through AIM to find her password for her?

yea funny ... same thing happened to a 'client' of mine for a couple porn sites ...

AIM used to store the pass and username in the registry in plaintext (yeah its dumb), they have since changed it to be encrypted I believe

looks like a lot of the recovery software out there only works with 4.x and earlier.

if she is using aim how cant she get into her email... aol and aim are two totally different things....im thinkin you want to look up a girls password either to see if shes cheating on you or you are just stalking her

For example, say I signed up with my college e-mail address. I graduate from college, they terminate my e-mail account and I forgot to change my e-mail address through AIM. I forget my password and I can no longer access my e-mail address. Or if you sign up for AIM with an e-mail address provided by your ISP and then you switch ISPs without switching your e-mail address on AIM....same deal.

thank you for your thoughtful and insightful post. Your lesson on AOL and AIM being seperate entities was especially helpful to those of us living under a rock...in a cave...on Mars. However, unlike some of the members on this board (possibly even yourself! who knows?!?) I have a job, where I help clients with small compter issues, and I sometimes come in to the forums for help.
