Had this question asked to me during lunch, and being a guy who never read the books, I am unsure. So, I thought I would put the power of ATOT to work. 😀

Why did Harry receive the mark on his forehead and not killed? Is there any special meaning or reason why the dude didn't just off him right then?

Thats the whole reason he is a celebrity, because "the one whos name we cant mention" couldnt kill him, he only left a mark.

So, the book doesn't give any real reason why the dude just marked him rather than off him? Its just a Frodo/Neo/Anakin Skywalker kinda vibe of being the chosen one?

Initially everyone thinks that Harry is some kind of "extra-special wizard to be" and this is why Mr Big Bad Dude wasn't able to kill him with the same curse he used to kill Harry's parents. We find out later in the books that it was actually a very powerful charm (Harry's mom sacrificing her own life to save Harry) that saved his butt when he was a baby....he's not immune to the curse other than that one instance as a baby.

Actually he does have special powers which made "he who must not be named" weak after he tried to kill Harry. That's why throughout the books he needs to borrow bodies, or drink Unicorn blood to stay alive

(correct me if I'm wrong)

The charm reflected the curse back at HWMNBN, nearly kiling him. That's why he's so weak early on.

i have seen the movie and read the books part of school, saw the movie for my lil sis' birthday, and it tells you at the end of the first book and @ the end of the first move that he is given the scare and not killed because of the love from his mother. his mothers love protected him. and because of the very stong love he was not killed .
this is why he doesnt die and the scar is on his forhead.
