"The (Dark Arts) teacher is a key character in the Harry Potter series, and a new one is introduced in each book. "

So the dark arts teach is like the Red shirts in Star Trek?

Except that you know it's the bad guy?

In the original Star Trek with Captain Kirk, the red shirt people, or extras that went on away missions would always end up dying. The rest of the people were main characters would not die.

I am such a nerd for knowing that. 😉

Yes, it's a bit of a running joke in the story that Hogwarts is unable to keep a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher for more than a year. The main characters make mention of it in later books.

That said, the teachers have not all been "bad guys."

they mention it in nearly every book. I think it was probably even mentioned in the first movie.

You're probably right. It's been a while since I've read the early books. 😉

Which of the Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers weren't bad?? They all were, some to a lesser extent but they were all bad.

They don't all die - but they do all have something happen to them that prevents them from teaching for more then a year.

Professor Lupin was pretty much the only truly non-badguy dark arts teacher.
Some of the others, while bad guys, did teach him a bit (mainly Snape & Crouch Jr (as Mad Eye)
The rest were just bloody useless.

Guilderoy Lockhart was not really a bad guy/evil. Just an egomanical con man.
