Harriet Tubman to replace Jackson on $20 bill

Not a fan of Jackson and love the idea of Harriet Tubman on the $20, but how much will the switch cost? If it's part of an already scheduled and budgeted redesign then great. If not, I wish we'd save the money for something else.

It's a part of a wider, long term redesign. Won't go into effect until 2030.

How about we leave everything as it is and focus on getting rid of the penny? We lose money on every one minted and the rounding up/down in order to eliminate the penny has worked well in other countries.

I pulled out a 20 to pay for a sandwich today at Lenny's subs. The cashier immediately started rambling about how it shouldn't have her on it, but should have Obama on it instead. I thought it was pretty interesting her perspective on it since she was black. She seemed to downplay what Harriet Tubman did, and while I think only presidents should be on money, I'd rather see her on it. I can imagine the risks she took would have had huge consequences had she been caught. I do realize that there are a few people who weren't presidents on some of our currency.

I left that place wondering if I was on some sort of hidden camera tv show.

Must be from the south. They've been trying to rewrite history there for a few decades now.

errr... from the south, we learned about her in school. I knew who she was when i read her name. No need to make a bad generalization Skippy.

we are also not the ones trying to rewrite history. power hungry fools seem to want that; though they located everywhere, not just in the southern US.

Could've put William Tecumseh Sherman on there, and Atlanta in flames on the back. We can call it a tribute to our shared cultural heritage.

Or Wehrner Von Braun! That guy knew how to shoot for the stars! (and London)

For sheer badassery we could put Oppenheimer on there, with a commemorative engraving of the Trinity test on the reverse, and replace In God we Trust with "I am become death, the destroyer of worlds."

keep jackson on some bill, as part of a new 'presidents in action' series.

he can be shown in a classy way beating the shit out of richard lawrence with his cane

...
As Jackson walked, Lawrence stepped out and fired his first pistol at Jackson's back; it misfired. Lawrence quickly made another attempt with his second pistol but that also misfired. It was later determined that the weapons he had chosen were noted for being vulnerable to moisture and the weather on that date was extremely humid and damp.[2]

Lawrence's unsuccessful attempts were noticed by Jackson, who proceeded to beat him with his cane, very brutally.

Only dead Presidents should be on our money!

lets replace ben f w/FDR!

and Bush Jr could have made that list and immortality if he didn't dodge the Zero Year curse. *sigh*

I lived in the little upstate NY town called Auburn for a few years in the 60's and 70's and Harriet Tubman's home was a local shrine. I'm fine with her replacing Jackson.

Wow, that's where I was born. My dad & lot of family still in that neck of the woods.

Yup, the peace treaty ending the war was already signed.

Jackson was a fraud.

All you guys denigrating Jackson know that he was the first Democrat POTUS, right? That he was an icon of the modern Democratic party?

This is a shock! Kind of amazing, I like it. I wonder what Solomon Thorthup would have said! He's the guy who wrote 12 Years a Slave, amazing great book, every American should read.

Well, I'm not sure I like that image, maybe they'll come up with something better. But if they use that, I'm OK with it. Just a mind blower. Dead presidents, indeed! How about dead freedom fighters. Slavery is America's worst hour, IMO.
I like that. The earlier suggestion of replacing Hamilton had me sharpening my pitchfork.

Hopefully this is next:

LOL, I like it!

2 things

1) people still use cash?
2) if you randomly asked me who is currently the 20 before this thread I would not have been able to tell you. its not something worth remembering
I encountered a very very counterculture looking African American in a line at Target ~1 year ago. He was the kind who was incarcerated a fair amount and he said his credit was trashed when he was behind bars and couldn't do anything about his debts. He didn't have his life together enough to pay his monthly bills. I told him he could have autopay pay off his credit card bills (and others) against a checking account and his credit wouldn't get hit because he'd neglected to pay a bill. This was a revelation to him, and he thanked me.

I carry (try to) at least $60 in cash... some places won't take plastic. Given the opportunity, I use plastic, of course.

No way! Old George is a dead ringer for my dead paternal grandmother and I'd miss seeing her whenever I want.

He balanced the budget! And gave away free blankets!
😀 +1

Meh, should have replaced Jackson with another Jackson, preferable Phil.
Or Michael.

Oh wait, that wouldn't work. They were looking for a black woman, not a white woman.

.......
They have a better pic of Tubman.

She carried concealed firearms and was very religious. That wouldn't make her popular in some circles today. 🙂

She was a spy and soldier who carried firearms to defend herself from armed religious nuts who supported slavery. She's still unpopular in some circles today who detest people like Obama.

Those two don't belong in the same sentence together. Obama isn't even close to the same level.
