Hi, I've been working in the audio/video industry for the past two years and have always used the harmony remote for my remote control needs. It's worked well but of course has its bugs, one being that it's IR and therefore has one way communication. I've recently began working with the Control 4 automation system and one thing I've noticed is that it's able to control certain devices over the LAN with a network driver for that device. It's able to determine the status of the device therefore eliminating out of sync issues.

Is there a standalone remote that can provide the same functionality and control over the LAN?

Thanks.

There's an option for ios devices (ipad, iphone, ipod touch) called Roomie Remote that uses your wifi. I don't know if it'll do what you want but maybe you can look into it. I know it can provide live two way feedback from many devices via IP integration.

So it seems that both the URC and Roomie will provide IP control. Unfortunately URC is very expensive and not very accessible. The Roomie remote only works with IOS devices with no other physical remote. Does anyone know of any other products that could use IP control? Many one that's still in production?

If those are too expensive, I'd look into software for a 7" android tablet. I'm fairly certain there is something that will work. Nearly all my wifi enable electronics have android apps now.

i use roomie remote to control my home theater and i love it.

if you are looking for an android one, check out iRule. it's available for both iOS and Android i believe. it seems like it takes a bit more setup the roomie does, but it also offers a lot more customization than roomie does. i got roomie because i saw it on someone's ipad when i was demo'ing stuff before i got all of my ht stuff, and i just liked the whole interface on it already. i still don't have a tablet to control it and still just use my phone, but it definitely works great and i don't know if i'll get a dedicated tablet just for it or not.

there is TONS of info over in the avs thread on it.

irule definitely has a bigger following than roomie too.
