I just got the harmony 620 from costco. I love it. it works great, especially for my mom. she doesn't have to wonder how to change inputs.

anyways is there a way to turn off the lcd display when the remote is not in use?

I don't want to waste battery life. for it to display "harmony" press next for instructions

I've read the manual, unless I missed it I can't seem to find option to make it go to sleep or even turn it off.
 
No there is no way. However a typical non-backlit LCD of that size takes about 10mA...about the amount taken by 3 LEDs....not a big deal.
