Harming the X1900XTX?

I noticed my temps were hitting like 86C and the fan was only running at like 32%, this is with nothing overclocked on the GPU. So I installed ATI Tools and set the fan at like 77% to keep the temps at like 70-71C. Running the fan that much harder, is it going to do any harm? What are your suggestions on the settings for the fan control?

I will admit though, I sold my two 256MB 7800GTX's and grabbed this card, and the image quality and power of this card is simply amazing. The drivers, well not so much, but the hardware and IQ is fantastic!

Another quick question, I noticed when I first turn my computer on, there is a small red LED by where the PCI-E 6 pin plugs in. It turns on for like a few seconds when i first boot my computer up but thats it. Is this also normal?

If you dont notice any errors on boot or a stress test im gessing you should be fine.

those are still really high.... try reseating the stock cooler or get a new one as soon as you can find one that fits it... my oc'd x800GTO2 only hits 50c w/ a ATI Silencer.

Well for stock cooling and stock fan control settings, I hear that 86C is pretty normal....Am I incorrect? Now it won't hit anywhere above 71C with the fan running at 77%.

Is there a better setting for me to apply for the Fan Control within ATI Tool?

71C is actually pretty good for the X1900 series at full load. I've seen guys using theirs at 90C on an everday basis with no problems.

By the way- When I looked at the title of the thread I thought someone was asking for ideas on how to harm their X1900XT because they were mad at it. Good to hear you're enjoying it and have no ill feelings towards your new toy.

If I were you (which I'm not), I would use the dynamic fan control and have set the fan to throttle from 23% @ 40C to 100% @ 75C

Have you ever heard an X1x00XT fan on high? 100% at 75C...? Might as well leave on 100% all the time.

while i don't own a x1900 (so my advice counts for little) i set atitool fan control to go 100% after 50.try something similar to that.

Trust me the IQ is not so much better, no shimmering is the only difference you would see.

i cant belive people are suggesting to leave the fan at 100% what the OP seems to be getting with 77% is really great IMO. Why change it if it aint broke. As for the red light, i would imagine the card does some diagnostic upon startup like with the 100% fan on startup. Nothing to worry about.
Really nice to hear your enjoying your card. What res do you play at, and with what monitor?

I play on a Viewsonic Graphic Series CRT. It's the G220fb, I normally play at 1600x1200 with all eye candy on, including HQ AF. My first rig has two 512 7800GTX's and the performance is strong, but the IQ is not near the X1900's IQ. You have your own opinion hemmy, and I really don't agree with it. Everything just looks a bit more crisp with the ATI card compared to my first rig, which is a SLI system. It's in my sig....

Thanks to all you blokes for all your help. I do appreciate it.

Just a suggestion, If your concerned about temps you could pick up the accelero X2 for around $30-40. Lowers temps alot, and a better OC=

I also noticed the better IQ from switching from NV to ATI, mostly the shimmering issue, but overall I think it is alot better.

Congrats on the nice card :D

I second the Accelero X2. Got one for my 1900XTX and it probably keeps things a good 10-20 degrees cooler! After a 3-hour Oblivion run at full throttle yesterday, my GPU was at something like 65 degrees. I've never seen it anywhere NEAR the high temps others are reporting. I have the fan set for full speed however, and it can get a bit noisy but I'd much rather have a cooler temp. Also, I have never run this card with the stock cooler so I can't say if it's noisier or quieter than stock.

im dying to try out a X1900 but i cant afford it! i dont think selling these 7800s would even make enough money to buy 1 lol

glad to hear its kicking ass though
