Today, while driving in Dallas, I happened to notice the guy on the sportster 883 next to me at the light was wearing shorts, a t-shirt, no helmet, and vibram five finger shoes. How does anyone think this is a good idea? I would imagine it actually hurts your foot on the brake and shifter with no padding as well...

I lost a little bit of faith in the local riding community today.

I see about 50 cruiser riders in t-shirt / no helmet for every one I see in a jacket and helmet - hell, even in just a helmet.

The sports bike / crotch rocket crowd seems to be a bit better about it, but then again, I see plenty in a helmet / t-shirt / shorts. The only people I've ever seen in full gear look ridiculous because every part of their gear color-matches their bike. Still, better to be made fun of and have all of your skin than the opposite, I'd bet. 🙂

my gear does not color-match my bike (my gear all matches though 😛)

what does that make me? 🙁

Yea, would seem that the common train of thought among cruiser rides is "Protective gear is for pussies...I live free!!!!". That said, the guys I ride with on sportbikes every weekend always wear full gear and it has become a rule since we had a guy go down without a jacket and get some road rash on his shoulder/arm.

I can't control what the idiots do, but I can wear my gear. ATGATT.

Here in CA the motorcycle cops wear a half helmet and short selves. It couldn't be all that unsafe or OSHA would be all over it.

I don't think it is any worse than staring at the vehicle next to you while driving instead of paying attention to the road ahead. 😉

Read the next line. We were stopped at a stoplight.

The shorts and shirt didn't surprise me, the shoes did. It is insane to basically wear nothing but socks.

oh noes! hurts your liddle feeties? What the fuck you get weekly pedicures or something?

Not a good idea, yes. However, I don't believe we should mandate people protecting themselves.

We should if they get immediate medical attention regardless of if they can pay for it.

Wrong argument, Chuck.

It say it's between him and his insurance company.

No insurance? Let him bleed out on the roadside.

The problem with that line of thinking is how can you prove he has insurance that will cover the needed procedures until those procedures are done? You're in a catch 22. Wait until you get a hit on his insurance and he dies, insurance info comes back and he's got coverage. Now you get sued for letting him die.
Taking him to the ER ASAP and fix him up and he doesn't have insurance, now the state pays.
What's going to be cheaper in the long run? Fixing him for thousands, or paying millions to his family?

Most bikers I see in Dallas, and I'm sure everywhere else are the same.
They either wear a helmet, with t-shirt and jeans/shorts, or will wear a leather jacket with jeans/shorts and no helmet, but you rarely see someone in full gear.

I am inside a metal cage (my car) and I can be pulled-over for not having a fabric strap around me (seatbelt).

Mandate full gear for all cyclists. Problem solved. Revoke licenses for anyone riding without the gear.

Win Win. lol The companies that make gear will make more money, the gov will make more taxes. Idiots will still plow into stopped cars and die because no amount of gear will protect you from going 120mph to 0mph in 3 feet.

You know... I see it equally among sport bike riders and cruisers... i live in charlotte, and it gets very hot and humid here. Most guys for short runs to the store will wear their shorts...I always cringe when I see them wearing sandals... WTF.

I had a bad wreck in 2002... Sent me to the hospital.. Was wearing helmet and gloves...Was very hot day...My jacket pants and boots were back in my apartment - It was just too hot to wear them... Went for a quick ride to charge the bike up after a long vacation away from the bike.... Paid the price dearly. Never would have been hospitalized or taken via EMT to the hospital if I had my gear on. For those that don't wear boots... Please do... I almost lost my foot that day - long story.

I now wear my gear *almost all the time. Very rare when I wear shorts and that is to the gym or store that is very very close by. I almost always wear my pants and jacket now and always a helmet, gloves and boots. The only thing I will ditch for a ride is my jacket on a 100 degree day... and still, I have it on the bike for when it cools off later.

Use gear gents.
