I joined this forum a few months after I started my current job.

When I left college 5 years ago this July, I joined a small startup Internet company. Instead of independent companies with no financial backing, we were owned by a larger more profitable company. Over the past 5 years, we've worked tirelessly on products for public schools and it has truly paid off for our company however we, as employees, have always been trying to 'catch up for lost time' sort of speak... basically paying off the financial hole we had dug with our owning company.

Last year we turned a profit for the first time, and the promise of substantial raises was upon us.

Today, I finally am making what I should be. I received an 18.5% raise along with a $1k bonus and yearly profit sharing bonuses that will equal from 5-20% of my salary.

See kids, hard work and determination CAN pay off. It took five years, and we're still small in staff (which currently means low overhead), but we work our asses off and we're getting paid nicely now because of it.

Thanks to everyone who provided any advice to me over the years or pointers on coding and life. You kept me sane when times were tough and it looked like we would never make it.

Awesome. Now wait until your boss buys everyone Aeron chairs and puts plasma-screen TVs in the office.

I started with my company around the same time period. Not a startup, but a large profitable company. I make 100% more than when I started, have averaged 20% annual bonuses and until this year (thank you SEC) I received 2-3K options. Did some hard work and had some determination, but my heart's not always in my work.

Hope I didn't rain on your parade.

I, too hope that all my hardwork in school will eventually let me open up my own practice one day (pediatrician).

Gee, I've been working my tail off for the past 7 years for a small telephony company (generally pulling 10+ days when I'm NOT on a client site doing 13-14 hour days for a week or so on an install)...

And we are going out of business!

Thing that sucks about working for a small company is that it makes it really tough to line up another job afterwards! At least with larger companies, you tend to have a network of coworkers, and as we all know, networking is the best way to find a new position...

When Hardwork pays off it's sweet, when it doesn't it sucks. Not much more needs to be said, other than Nothing Ventured Nothing Gained: aka: To succeed Hardwork is necessary, however, Hardwork does not in itself lead to Success.
