If I am trying to fix bad hard circuitry with software mending it is a lost cause - it occured to me I need to know how one detcts the difference.?

Tough call. Troubleshooting is taking things one step at a time. Go back to basics removing one hardware component at a time until the problem goes away. Same goes for software probs; remove one program at a time until the problem goes away.

Certainly more detail would be helpful if you want a better answer. What, specifically, is your problem? List as much detail as possible. Hardware configuration, software/OS, did the computer work before "X" was installed/added etc.

How does one detect the diff. between hardware and software problems? I think experience is the answer. For me that means researching prior similar cases or asking the pro's here. As said above, post your problem here with details and likely somebody can help.
