?? Hardware vs Software Clock ??

Hi All,

What is the difference between the hardware and software clocks? I think (but I may very well be wrong) that the hardware clock is an oscillator found on the motherboard and the software clock is the time kept by the operating system (in my case Win2k) which gets initialized at bootup by the hardware clock. Is that correct?

Also, how can I get the value of the hardware and software clocks using the Visual Studio C++ (MS API)? Is it possible to change their values as well? The Network Time Protocol application found at ntp.org seems to only adjust the software clock but NOT the hardware, is that true?

Thanks for all of your help!

A) This is not a "General Hardware" question (at least not the second part of it; that belongs in Software/Programming).

B) Look in the documentation for VC++; I'm sure a search for "Time" will turn up the proper functions to use.

A) Lots of the questions in this category can easily be sorted into another one... I see questions about cases, video cards, cpus, Voice over IP, even questions about Hot Deals... sorry I didn't see a clock category.

B) Why not try to kill two birds with one stone? If people don't know the answer to the software side of the question, I don't expect them to go out of their way to answer it, just ignore it (But I think chances would be high that if the people on this forum could answer the first question, they would be able to answer the others).

C) Example: You just tried to help answer my software question and ignored the hardware question.

D) ick... i hate when people go out of their way to post comments like yours.

Not my fault that AT Forums has a "General Hardware" forum in addition to more specific hardware forums. All of the things mentioned here are at least tangentially related to hardware; questions about the MS Windows API are not. VoIP questions should really go in Networking, however. Usually the only Hot Deals-related things you see in GH are questions or comments relating to a Hot Deal on a particular piece of computer hardware.

Because it just clutters up the GH forum, since it is unlikely to be answered here. It's not *so* bad when you tack it onto another post, but it's still annoying.

Sorry for being helpful. Maybe next time I'll just ignore you. :disgust:

These forums are (despite the existence of AT moderators) largely self-moderated. If your post is off-topic, or a repost, or trolling, or you break other 'rules' like bumping threads repeatedly, you'll usually get replies like this. If this bothers you, this is not the forum for you.

This has to end because your argument isn't working.

So why just attack my post? Why not attack everyone elses? And as for 'cluttering the GH forum' by doing so... oh gosh... 20 more words... What a mess!

Yes you were helping me, and by doing so you proved my point that a SOFTWARE question can be answered along with my HARDWARE question! :disgust:

Off Topic? lets see... I did have a hardware question.
Repost? I don't think so.
Trolling? Nope.

Self Moderated? Okay. Don't mind if I moderate back then.

Ad hominem attack. You're implying that I arbitrarily chose your post for criticism.

I've told people they're posting things in the wrong forum before, and I'll probably do it again in the future. However, I don't zealously go around scanning the forum for off-topic posts; if it's blatantly off-topic, I usually just ignore it. Yours *looked* on-topic, so I read it, and noted in my response that it was not really a question for GH. Perhaps if you had more than 17 posts, you might know something about my posting history.

Yeah -- if you were the only person who did this.

I don't have much more to add here. If all you're going to do is insult me and sneak words past the language filter (ooh, there's a neat trick! Never seen that one before!), I have better things to do with my time.
