Hardware transition (new motherboard) in W2k

I have two brothers that are currently running systems that need to be upgraded. Here are specs:

Brother 1:
AMD K6-2 450Mhz
AOpen AX59 Pro
128mb PC100

Brother 2:
AMD Athlon 1Ghz
MSI K7T Pro2-a
512MB PC133 (4x128MB)

They both want to try out the ECS K7S5A with Athlon XP 1700+'s. I told them about the flawless install I had with mine and they wanna give it a try for themselves now ($52 for a brand new board.......good price when you're married with kids hehehehe).

My question is, will they need to reinstall Windows 2000 on their respective systems after changing the motherboards out? Or is there something they can do in Windows before removing the old board that will ease the transition???

Any help on this is greatly appreciated......😀

Matt

If both the old and the new motherboard use the same HAL and disk controller driver, you should be fine.

If they use different disk controller drivers, install the driver for the disk controller on the new mobo before moving the drive.

If they use different HAL's, you're out of luck.

Would deleting all of the entries out of Device Manager for the old board do anything? Or is that a pipe dream :Q and the OS will need to be reinstalled?

most of the time it dosent work (tried like 20 times 🙂 )

BE safe - backup data and just reinstall

No. Leave that alone.

If the machines need different HALs, it cannot be done. Period.

Otherwise, see my previous post in this thread.

Your MSI K7T Pro2-a board uses teh Win2k ACPI Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL). The older AOpen board MAY use the older "Standard PC" HAL which uses APM.

You can verify that the older board uses one or the other by going to the Control panel, Device Manager, and expanding the first subtree (computer icon). It should say either "Standard PC" or "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface PC". If it says the latter, then you should be able to swap out the boards.

Things to look out for:

If you have installed any device drivers that are listed in "Add/Remove Programs" in the control panel, go ahead and uninstall them before you swap the board. Then reinstall them after you're done swapping the board out. This includes things like VIA 4-in-1 drivers.

Good luck! As always, back up your important files before you try anything like this, 'cause you very well might end up with an unbootable system...
