Hardware/Software problem.. not sure

Hi everybody,
I've got a question related to windows media player. I believe that after I updated my video card to the latest drivers, a problem arose with wmp that caused it to only play the first frame and then the rest would be totally black. I've used videolan and it works fine, but I prefer to get things working again with wmp. I found a web page that described this problem as "flicker," and that unclicking the box "Start player in Media Guide" might help. It didn't, but where it said to turn Hardware accleration off it did. I had to move the slider to the point where it said "disable all directDraw and direct3d accelearations, as well as all cursor and advanced drawing accelerations. use this setting to correct severe problems with directx and acclerated applications" I'm looking for another way around this, as a lot of the work I do is dependant on hardware acceleration, not just my cpu power. I ran the direct3d and directdraw tests under dxdiag and it all worked fine. The only problem is playing movie files. By the way, I tried reformatting a week ago to see if that would help but it didn't. And I have all the latest drivers, directX, codecs etc..TIA!

Yes, in fact I also have installed an older version of it (I think the one that came in the win2k installation disk), and that version has the same problem too. Vlc is the only thing that works now.
