Hello Everyone,
I am installing a new hard drive on my computer which is a Seagate 200 GB ATA 8mb catche, 7200rpm, and I need to install service pack one for windows xp to utilize the entire drive space. However, I went to windowsupdate to aquire the download for service pack one, and upon installation I get this message:
The core system file (kernel) used to start this computer is not a microsoft windows file. The service pack will not be installed.
I have gone to the windows service and looked at their solution and got this:
SYMPTOMS
When you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 (SP1 or SP2), you may receive the following error message:
Windows has detected that one or more protected core system files (kernel) on your computer have been modified. The Service Pack contains updated versions of those files, which work to provide a stable environment for your programs. Due to this modification, the Service Pack will not be installed. For more information, see Knowledge Base article Q327101 at http://support.microsoft.com.
I also have aston shell swapper and uninstalled it and replaced the kernel file. I still get the message by replaceing the ntoskrnl.exe since I have tweaked it manually, but still no change. It tells me to go into the boot.ini file and change it there, but I am not sure exactly what to change it to. Does anyone have any ideas? If you do, please post them. I think the worst case scenario is to just reformat the master drive, since I have two drives, the one that has the problem is just a secondary slave drive. I can reinstall the windows operating system and start off clean. I however want to find a alternative to the problem without having to do all that work.
Thank you for reading this post and helping with the problem!
