So, about a week ago I decided to purchase a new processor because my 2.6 Celeron wasn't cutting it for my gaming PC. I decided to buy a p4 Prescott 3.0ghz (800fsb) processor to replace my old processor. After I installed it, I started playing my previous games that were chopping and lagging. Finally, my games are fluid but my computer is lagging. This ONLY happened after I installed the new chip. It takes forever for my system to pull up programs and occasionally locks up for a few minutes while it's trying to process. The problem is not related to spyware/virus but I have ran spysweeper and symantech a/v to ensure that.

Any advice?

My system:

xP sp2 (mce)
3.0ghz (800fsb) p4
Crucial 1ghz memory pc 3200
latest nVidia drivers
200gb wd hdd (12gigs free)

what motherboard do you have?

And have you tried putting the celeron back in to see if the problems diminish?

No motherboard compatiblity issues. Brand new 500w power supply (antec). Would the celeron drivers show up in add/remove programs?

CPU tempature is stead at 43c/109f

yeah, a fresh OS install might fix the problem.

It might be some technical junk that the processor is having problems with aka chipset drivers and whatever, and a fresh OS install might just do the trick.

As you guys can understand, I want a fresh install to be the last option.

Well, are you comfortable wading through the registry removing the Celeron garbage?

If not, try CrapCleaner.

Good luck.
